It was great to see the best horse in this race win regardless of weight allowances or draw. This six year old son of the great Cherokee Sunset is one of the best turf milers around and today he proved that age is no barrier to success with his 11th career win. There is an interesting point to look at here because if we go back 4 months to his last win in the grade one MM Mile we see a remarkable similarity. From a wide draw in that race he went to the lead off the back of the outside speed push and made all the running moving comfortably clear at halfway and holding on cozily. The times he ran that day were almost exactly the same as today and if you look at the two races his effort is almost exactly the same. If you compare those two runs to his effort in the Shoemaker Mile we see similar pace times but with an inside draw he was never put near the front. It would be interesting to know how the three sets of instructions compare but i wouldn’t blame the trainer to keep that information firmly to himself.
Congratulations to John Henry who acquired this horse in 2018 for $330 after a win at this meet in the DMR Handicap.

The three year olds ran above their form as usual and this wasn’t the one i expected to claim the prize of first three year old home. Having said that he is an improving sort and this career best run will give his owner a huge boost. Like most of the field he wasn’t interested in chasing the easy leader settling well off the pace, that may have cost him the win in the end as he flew home but nevertheless this was a great effort.

3rd Tonys Aprill Thrill Mb Stables Fuentes Ru

I guess the two options from the wide draw are to go to the front or go to the back. Today he got it wrong heading back as the other wide draw got a nice lead. He flew home when it was all over and i think we still haven’t seen the best of this ex free track runner.

4th Plucky Ben Arindel Pereira T J

Got into a nice stalk early on but then went back off the strong pace only to run on again later. This wasn’t the best ride by the jockey who seemed to change their mind a few times during the run. Not a bad effort by the five year old though.
