Grab A Beer, It’s the Irish Stakes

Sunday sprinting will bring nine nice fillies and mares to the gate here in SoCal and we look at the field for the Irish Stakes, a six furlong dash on the SA turf course.  We have a real closely matched group of horses in my opinion but I’m looking for a turning of the tables and will take Win For Red as my to choice.  She was most recently second in the Wishing Well over this surface and I think she will get the job done today.  In that race, Win For Red took the win and she will be my second choice today.  Does she every run a bad race?  Let’s put La Terrifant another that we will include in our tickets here.  She just missed in a five furlong sprint at TAM last out and won over this strip prior to that, and at today’s distance… I’m loving these top three.

Here’s The Field –

1
High Ended    John Henry    Fuentes Ru   123   8/1

She hasn’t had her picture taken since the Buena Vista (GII) back in Feb of last season, over this strip.  She was close a couple of times and sold privately back in Oct of last season.  Since then, it’s a couple of mid-pack finishes so she needs to turn it around to be a factor.  She does well on wet tracks so they are probably hoping for precipitation.

2
   Cassandra G    Angelos Stable    Hernandez J J   123   7/2

Five wins from ten starts last year and kept that going with a third to start 21, then won last out taking a stakes at FG.  She fits right into this spot and certainly has the speed to be a huge factor.  I’d plan on giving her a big look today.

3
La Terrifiant    Smokey Stover    Gutierrez Mario   123   3/1

Another sharp sprinter that won four of nice starts last year and has continued that form into 21.  Won the SSM F&M Turf Sprint over this course and then just missed closing fast in the Lightning City at TAM.  She is a fast mare and I think she’s the one to get past.

4
   Gold Futures    TwinTowersRacing    Espinoza V   123   7/1

Closed out 20 with a pair of wins and she was on the board in four other starts last season, but this year has been a pair of mid-pack finishes.  She drops back in distance as they try to shake her up a bit.  She’s going to need her best in with this group.

5
Brevia    BomBay Stables    Valdivia J Jr   123   6/1

Very versatile filly that was tough going anywhere from five and a half furlongs to a mile and a half… you don’t see many of those.  She won three races last year and just missed last out when second (DH) at GP in a graded race going a mile and an eighth.  Shortens up again so it will be interesting to see what she does.

6
Win For Red    Spankys Barn    Prat F   123   4/1

Very consistent type that just doesn’t run a bad race.  Only a single win last season and she’s already matched that this year winning the Wishing Well over this track in her most recent.  She was second here on SSM Day so you have to give her serious consideration in this one as well.

7
Amaris    First Street Stables    Gonzalez Ru   123   8/1

Was as solid as you could want a horse to be last season on the board in eight of nine races and had three victories in that batch.  Her 21 debut was uncharacteristically bad beating on horse in the Suwannee River (GIII).  They shorten her up trying to get her back in line and her best should put her in the middle of things.

8
Gummy    High Voltage    Van Dyke D   123   4/1

Three wins last season in only eight starts and just missed in her seasonal debut over this track in the Wishing Well.  She has speed and loves the grass so I’d expect a big effort from her today.

9
   Red Eclipse    Allinthegate    Cedillo A   123   10/1

Only one win last year and she’s already equaled that winning an Alw race at TUP to kick off her 21 season.  She been facing softer for the most part and her graded stakes try over this surface last year resulted in a seventh place finish.  She’s going to need more than that today.
