Grayte Catch Tries to Emulate Her Name in The Beaugay

The Beaugay – Grade III
BEL Race #5 1 1/16m Turf Graded Stake
Purse $150.000 For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upward.

1        Angel Shark         John Henry          Jaramillo E

This five year old hasn’t had the best start to 2021 but was good enough last year to suggest she wont be long in coming to form. A stakes winner at three she was a very good fourth in the BC Fillies and Mares Turf storming home from a wide draw. She built on that season last year by winning the Marshua River and the Red Carpet Handicap but also ran good races in the First lady when third and in the KD Ladies Turf when second. In her two efforts this year she has been slow away and struggled to make ground so the key today may be how she gets away over this shorter trip. The draw will certainly help her start so i think we may see a more competitive effort today.

2    Deep Atonement         Nakamura Stables      Carrasco V R

Won the ONT Colleen Stakes last year but went off the boil a little after that so she was taken back to overnight company for a couple of confidence boosters. She won both of those races with ease and was then brought back to stakes company in her last start in the Santa Ana Stakes. She stalked the lead but was a little one paced down the stretch ending up fifth but just a length off the winner. She gets all favors with the draw today and is back to a trip that suits her so with the strong works she has been laying down i expect a bold show today.

3    Joan Of Arc          Our Athletes           Beschizza A

A daughter of Commanding she was tested after winning her maiden last year and did pretty well in tough company. Second in the Regret she ran in stakes company five more times and whilst she didn’t win one she ran well in all of them. 2021 started well with a win in the Stall Memorial and then a third in the Fox but she fell apart in the soft going on her last start and was a long way back in the Wiley. Her works are solid and she certainly has shown enough promise to get into this race.

4     Intanga Rose       D J C Racing Stables        Lezcano J

Another that floundered on the wet track in the Wiley last time she had been good prior to that running up three graded stakes in a row last year culminating in an impressive win in the American Oaks at grade one. Forgetting that effort she is right in this race and her works suggest she is ready. The stable is just coming back to form after a sticky start to the year so it may not be long before she gets back to winning ways.

5       Delinquent Assembly        Nakamura Stables      Carmouche K

An established stakes contender as a four year old she won the Endeavor and ran third in the Just A Game in a solid season. Following a poor run in the Noble Damsel the trainer took her back to allowance company for her next four starts where she ran three seconds before finally getting one at TUP. Those efforts seem to have given her a little boost as she won the Plenty Of Grace last time when getting back into stakes company. She certainly has ability but tends to be a little one paced in a finish so she will need to get a break on them as they hit the stretch today.

6         Classic Princess       Lindeman Prairie       Cancel E

The trainer has been patient with this one and it has certainly paid off. Claimed for just $3.50 last year she was slowly moved through the grades winning three more before breaking through at stakes level in the CC Tiara. She has kept that improvement going this year running a close fourth in the Suwannee River and then a fine second in the Santa Ana Stakes last time with Deep Atonement and Angel Shark behind. That looks to be the form line for this race so puts her in a strong position to win as long as she can overcome this sticky draw.

7     Grayte Catch        Patterson Stables          Gutierrez Mario

With only four starts this four year old is the gold standard for lightly raced. After a poor maiden effort as a two year old she missed an entire season last year and didn’t run again until she turned four. She took a claimer on seasonal debut and was spotted and claimed by her current owner who then sent her to the Fritchie Stakes where she finished third and then to the grade one Vinery Madison where she was even close but again in third. That is pretty impressive form for a filly with just four starts under her belt and it is interesting to see her trainer switch her to turf today a surface she has yet to run on. With zero form and no public works it is impossible to know how she will run today but we have seen horses switch surfaces many a time and run their best race so i am very wary of her in this race.

SUMMARY

Well my HRP head says Grayte Catch because i have seen too many horses switch surfaces for the first time and pull out a win to go against her. However if we want to talk turf form then things look much different. On works they are all very close but on form Classic Princess may have the edge but i doubt you could squeeze more than a length or two between them. If the rains come we can put a line through many of these so keep an eye on the weather before laying your bets.
