Hawaii County Way Too Good In The Penny Memorial

1st   Hawaii County   Mb Stables   Pennington F

Well this is what happens when the draw monster gives a grade one winner from Mb Stables a decent draw, a demolition.
Already a winner on an off track over this trip the weather held no fears and when the leader went off on what looked like a pace instruction (we all know they don’t work properly in the wet) and set a pace too strong for the conditions then it was clear the closer’s would win the day. One of the furthest back was this filly and when she wound up for her late run it was all over a long way out.
This is a classy filly who has flown under the radar thanks to some soft races this year after her grade one winning season as a three year old i would suspect a grade two or one is on her agenda now as the stable starts to bring out their BC challengers.
Definitively one to keep an eye on in the coming months.

2nd   Pure Motor   Night Rider Stables   Gomez J A

The improvement this one has shown this year has been noticeable and though she was well beaten by the winner her second place cements her as an older mare with a bright future, albeit not a long one. With three placings at graded level this year she is due a win and if she can avoid horses like the winner that win at this level can’t be far away.

3rd   Classic Princess   Maxmillion Farm   Laprida J

A little one paced at the end she did a lot of work early to try and stay with the strong pace and in the end paid the price. I think in hindsight her trainer may have been better off letting her run from deep and use her stamina but at the end of the day they chose the right instructions when maybe others didn’t. Still a good effort though she is still struggling to find her excellent form of last year.

4th   My Girl Makita   Smokey Stover   Silvera Ru

Ran the right race and finished well but she does look a little bit of a light of former years now and i wonder how long her trip to the shed can be held off. Last year it surprised me a little that she went for the BC Sprint so we may see her get one more go at getting into one of the BC races but i feels if that ends in failure then she may be producing a Q4 yearling.
