Holy Reception Will Be Tough to Beat in LCD Ladies Sprint

LCD Ladies Sprint ($100.000 Purse)
FG- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward Foaled in LA
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
December 9, 2023

LA-Breds will get our attention this weekend, and this will include female sprinters as the LCD Ladies Sprint takes place for the 10th time. The race initially took place in 2006, but has only run inconsistently since then, more than likely due to fields not filling. That was probably the case last year, as the race was not held. In 2021, the winner was Start The Mummy, for Axeman, and it was the last race that she would win. Of the nine prior races, a third of them have been won by Team 7 Illusions but he will not have a runner this year. Here’s a look at those who will be heading to the starting gate!

#1- Jaded Lover (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by M Murrill)- Probably a bit of a frustrating one to own, given she only has two wins in 20 starts, but has frequently been in the top four, especially after Mo Mentum picked her up in the auction last year. Last won in July, and since then she is a competitive runner but could have been a little better here for the Herbert Memorial Stakes last month. No reason not to try again.

#2- At Risk (Asgar, ridden by C J Hernandez)- All but one of her starts have been with the LA-bred condition, and that includes a handful of stakes. She did not win any of them, but has been second twice, including in the Ferguson Memorial Stakes, where three of the four runners in the field were owned by Asgar. That would mean he had options for this race, and choosing At Risk shows a high degree of confidence.

#3- Holy Reception (T Boy Racing, ridden by D L Parker)- Ran here last month in the Herbert Memorial Stakes, and picked up the victory. That’s something that she has become accustomed to doing, with twelve wins in 40 starts with several of them being in LA-bred stakes. With T Boy Racing, she has regularly been running with this condition and even ran in the 2021 edition of this race. In that, she placed second by a nose, so even though it has been a couple years, she can get a little redemption. She is the one to beat in this field.

#4- Riser (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by D Cohen)- She’s been on the rise she was part of my stable in 2021, but I am not surprised to see her on this positive path. Angelos Stable did well to bring her forward some more, and in May she would be claimed by D J C Racing Stables. Since then, she has hit the board in all five of her starts with one win. The most impressive run, though, was her second-place effort in the $150.000 Groupie Doll. Should be in the mix, and I will certainly be rooting for her as her breeder.

#5- Andthentherewerenone (Asgar, ridden by A Beschizza)- The second entry for Asgar in this field, and one that will be asked to do something she’s never done before: run on dirt. The entirety of her career has been on the grass, and all but her first two races have been at least a mile. Whether or not this is best for her remains to be seen, and her works are on the inconsistent side.

#6- Cajunville (Winplace, ridden by J Loveberry)- Will make her debut for her trainer in this one, following a claim of $5.000 up at FL last month. She was third of four in that race, beaten by three lengths, a race that stopped a three-race winning streak. The stakes weren’t particularly high in those races, but she does have work times that suggest that she is as good as any of her rivals here. Maybe this filly simply needed a trainer that wanted to give her this type of test.

Prediction: 3-1-4-6
