LA Race #2 $150.000

3YO C/G 120 F 115 Lbs (+penalties)

1/8 Dirt

Stakes/Track Record-1:47.67 (Port On The Horizon-2015)

Intercontinental ran them off of their feet in the $300.000 G3 LA Derby.  Maybe it was the five pound weight break, maybe it was the inside draw, or maybe the 3yo daughter of Cherokee Sunset was just the fastest sophomore on the LA dirt track on Saturday.  Whatever the reason, Intercontinental went to the front and improved her position.  Cross The Stars was a length back in 2nd while Plan To Wheel came home 3rd.

Prior to the race, trainer Smokey Stover, said he always has breeding in mind when he makes a purchase; however, if his filly keeps running like this, it may be a while before she reaches the shed.  With the win, Intercontinental improves her record to 10-3-1-1 with career earnings of $267.320 and earns a valuable four BC points.

Running a half mile in :472/5, Intercontinental was two lengths clear of her nearest competitor and maintained that two-length margin through three-quarters in 1:104/5 with Cross The Stars her nearest opponent at that stage.  When she hit the 1/8 pole in 1:35, she still had two lengths on Cross The Stars, but Plan To Wheel had moved to within four lengths in 3rd.  Nearing the wire, Intercontinental held sway and hit the wire completing her nine furlong journey in 1:47 4/to finish a length in front of Cross The Stars and two lengths in front of Plan To Wheel.  The 2nd and 3rd place finishers added two points and one point to their respective BC tallies.

Congratulations to Intercontinental and Smokey Stover, you 2021 G3 LA Derby winners!
