It’s a Backwater’s Romp in La Prevoyante Handicap

La Prevoyante Handicap (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
GP- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Half on the Inner Turf
January 26, 2019

It was a wet one at GP on Saturday, and in the La Prevoyante Handicap, it cost us one of our entries, as Youthful Presence scratched out. This left us with a field of five going at it. The scratch also meant that L H Colon may be without a ride, and in a turf race you just can’t have that. So Maxmillion Farm took J R Velazquez off, because naturally, L H Colon is superior in ability and was the right choice. With Colon aboard Backwaters, the four year old filly was ready to take on the twelve furlongs for the first time in her career, and she splashed away to a five length victory. Colon wins the race for the second year in a row, and Maxmillion gets his first La Prevoyante win. Congratulations to them! The time of the win on the soft turf was 2:33.13. Let’s take a look!

(½ Mile- :49.96)- Initially, Fast Girl Gaviota, from Establo Pichon was the quickest out of the starting gate. It seemed as though she would show the way early until just before the end of the initial backstretch run, British Chai came charging on through for Mo Mentum Farm. This would give her the lead, and she would only open up around the turn, leading by three at a half mile as Fast Girl Gaviota backed off. Light The Fuse now ran right beside her for Diablo Diablo, with another length and a half back to RNP Stables’ Brunos Secretary. At the back, four lengths behind the closest rival, and nine lengths back overall was our eventual winner, Backwaters, as L H Colon was happy to let the rest of the field have their fun while he prepared to strike.

(3/4 Mile- 1:15.24)- Not surprisingly, this portion of the race is rather calm. British Chai hits the wire on the first lap with an approximate three length lead. Fast Girl Gaviota and Light The Fuse keep one another company and ride side by side, and neither is interested in applying more pressure on the leader. Brunos Secretary seems to like where she is on the track as well, and Backwaters remains nine lengths out.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- As the field moved into the backstretch, British Chai started to get a little leg weary, and everyone gained ground. Fast Girl Gaviota and Light The Fuse were not going to force the pass, but would take it as it fell into their lap. Brunos Secretary and Backwaters cut their deficit accordingly with this fade. By the end of the backstretch, Light The Fuse was taking over the lead, but the story now became Backwaters, as she cut the four length gap that she was spotting Brunos Secretary, and looked poised to pass a few of them. She would get caught behind British Chai as they rounded the turn, but once that one was out of the way, and they hit the top of the stretch, she looked like she was in a completely different league then her rivals.

(Finish- 2:33.13)- In the stretch, all that was left to do was watch Backwaters run as she exploded with power that no one else was close too. In a blink of an eye, she took the lead, and was drawing away, leaving the field well behind and winning by five.. Light The Fuse probably wasn’t as bad in the stretch as the viewer might make her look, and was clearly second best. Brunos Secretary slipped by Fast Girl Gaviota, who started to tire herself in the stretch. British Chai was well off the winning time.

About The Winner- Backwaters, trained by Maxmillion Farm, and ridden to victory by the great L H Colon, is a four year old filly by Requesting Flyby, and is out of Tiger Duke. She was bred in California by Oliver Klozov as a yearling, and was acquired by Maxmillion while she was still unraced from Yankee Doodle Stable for $25.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in 10 starts, and is her first stake win. Her career earnings are now $235.300.
