It’s Nancy or Maggie for The NY

06/07 The NY – Grade II
BEL Race #6 1 1/4m InTurf Graded Stake
Purse $600.000 For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upward.

1 Fancy Princess Alabarda Stable Ortiz J L

This filly has never been a punters choice but she keeps on throwing up very nice performances at long odds. In her last start she very nearly beat Midnight Sneaking in the Bewitched starting at odds of 90/1 and seemingly with very little chance of success. That was a definite improvement on her previous form but i think the key is this surface which has seen by far her best form. Guaranteed to stay every yard she will be long odds again but may be ready to surprise a few.

2 Chai Mission Maxmillion Farm Gutierrez

A bit of a bridesmaid in recent seasons she looked destined for another season of near misses when the rain came to CD last time and she duly went in to take the CD Distaff Mile with an impressive turn of foot. There is no doubt she is a better filly in the wet but anything from this stable on turf must be respected and she has shown plenty on dry ground too. She has a little bit to find with some of these but if the clouds darken and the rain comes watch out!

3 Nancy Broom Moytoy Team 7 Illusions Bejarano R

This filly had a huge year last year winning two grade ones and when she came out this year and won her first two including the Santa Ana Stakes it looked like she could go through the year almost unbeaten. In her last start however we were left scratching our heads as she stalked a slow early pace and had nothing when asked ending up a fairly well beaten third in the Gamely. I think the key to that race was the slow early pace as this filly is a real stayer and needed a strong run 9 furlongs so when pushed came to shove she just wasnt quick enough as the pace got quicker and quicker the further they went. This trip is much more up her alley and i expect her to get back to winning ways.

4 Pip Kadabra Chili King Stables Pennington

This grand six year old mare may have her best season behind her but she is more than capable of still making her presence felt at this level. With just the one win in the last two years i suspect a place is her best hope but if she can use this nice draw to get up on the speed she is sure to give you a run for your money,

5 Midnight Sneaking Invicta Group Llc Alvarado J

Just nosed out Fancy Princess in the Bewitched last time and that was an improved effort after a solid finish in the Orchid the time before. She is not an impressive worker but she loves these extreme trips although even this 10 furlongs may not be far enough for her. If she can stay within 5 lengths of them early on she will be pushing on strongly at the end.

6 Fomalhaut John Henry Velazquez J

This tough five year old is a real consistent sort and gets a chance for a big purse in a fairly light field. All her wins have come at lower level but she ran well in the Beaugay last time when running on into second and she looks on the cusp of her first graded stakes win. Her works have been good but this is her first try over 10 furlongs so there is a bit of an unknown there.

7 Agenda Mb Stables Colon L H

A fair two and three year old she has got better since turning four and may be worth following as she is one of the ones on the up rather than the other way. A game winner of The Very One running her usual stalking style she then got lumped into the lead by a process of race engine elimination last time in the Wiley and suffered as many do in that situation by weakening late. I think that run was just one of those slow pace anomalies that can be thrown up with the system and if she can sit a length or two off the lead she may be the biggest danger to Nancy Broom Moytoy.

8 Nebulae Z Team 7 Illusions Beschizza A

With only five starts she is the most inexperienced in the field but she is far from the worst. Bought as a twice raced three year old maiden for $150 she started her four year old season for the new owner with two easy wins in overnight grade. Last time out she took on the Sheepshead Bay and although she was easily beaten by Maggie Greene did manage second. She may only be in the hunt for third today but she is a progressive sort and has many more miles on the clock.

9 Snacks D J C Racing Stables Gallardo A

A typically tough and consistent sort that we expect from this trainer. A grade three winner as a three year old she has looked good this year running third in the Fox and then running a cracker in the Wiley when only beaten a neck into second. She had Agenda behind that day and i really liked her chances in the Beaugay last time out but she got too far back off a slow pace and though she ran on strongly the pace beat her in the end. I cant see her beating my top choice here but she is a very good chance for a close second.

10 Maggie Greene The Sidley Stud Husbands

Probably the most ‘in form’ filly in this race she has been hugely impressive in her last two starts winning the Orchid and the Sheepshead Bay by clear air. Both those races were run at slower than average paces though so she may have been flattered by the on pace winning distance and a better reflection of her chances may be from The Very One form where she ended up a neck second to Agenda. Make no mistake this is one of the two best horses in this race but this outside gate will only work in her favor if she once again gets a soft lead.

SUMMARY

Maggie Greene and Nancy Boy Moytoy are head and shoulders above these on what they have achieved so far and they would be my top choices. Third place looks to be between a little group of them headed by Snacks and including Agenda, Midnight Sneaking and Chai Mission. If it rains then Chai Mission goes right up the scale and may even win and of course the real race will be decided by the pace of the race and as we have seen before just about any of these could win with the best trip.
