Kalaeloa had a below average race last time out but got the train back on track in the Beholder Mile (GI) sloshing home by a neck, in a blanket finish, and a final time of 1:382 for the mile over a strip labeled muddy.  Blue Caviar, never far off of the pace and sent off as the rank outside at 20/1 had the lead in the stretch but settled for second, nosing out Cannolo, who finished third.

The field of eight got away from the gate under cloudy skies and Out And Bad was on the front end as they made the short run to the clubhouse turn.  Blue Caviar next to that one, Kalaeloa from the outside, Grayte Crack between horses ad Pennies along the rail, Cannolo behind that group, On The Flop, and the early back marker was Camp Hollywood.

Now making their way down the backside, five furlongs left to run, and Out And Bad was now in front by three lengths.  Blue Caviar along the rail and giving chase, Cannolo on her outside then another length to Pennies saving ground, Kalaeloa on her flank, another gap to Grayte Crack, then the duo of On The Flop and Camp Hollywood at the back of the pack.

Down the backside and now midway on the far turn, the field went past the five-sixteenth’s pole and Out And Bad was now looking Blue Caviar in the eye, and now Cannolo three wide and up to join that pair.  Kalaeloa just in behind that trio in striking position, then a gap back to Pennies along the rail, Grayte Crack next to that one, On The Flop just in behind that pair and Camp Hollywood could still see them all.

Inside the furlong pole and to the finish, Blue Caviar up to stick a neck in front, Cannolo on her outside, Kalaeloa now pressing forward from the inside as Grayte Crack tried to close down the center of the track.  But inside the final 150-yards and to the finish, this was a three horse battle for the win and as they hit the wire it was very close and the PHOTO sign was lit on the infield tote board.  After viewing the video replay Kalaeloa was the winner by a neck, Blue Caviar held off Cannolo for the second spot by a nose, Grayte Crack was fourth with On The Flop closing late to be fifth.  Pennies was sixth, Camp Hollywood seventh and pace setter Out And Bad faded to be last in the field of
eight.

Kalaeloa is a 4yo chestnut filly by Good Authority – Happy Wife, by Grandeur, and she was bred by her owner, Smokey Stover, in Pa.  This was her fifth win from fourteen starts and she now shows $528.570 in earnings.  This was her first GI win, but expect this one to keep her form and make 2020 a huge year.

Kalaeloa broker alertly, taken back shortly after the start to track the leaders, responded when asked, prevailed in a long dual, won driving.  Blue Caviar away well, pressed the leader to the top of the lane, took a lead into deep stretch, could not contain the winner in a game effort. Cannolo mid-pack early, up to press the leader, out-finished but continued well.  Grayte Crack taken back after the start, evenly, best foot too late.  On The Flop lacked early foot, some late action while no threat. Pennies mid-pack, saved ground, tired.  Camp Hollywood was never involved.  Out And Bad sent from the start, lead nearing the lane, stopped.
