Key Biscayne Uses Late Move to Take the Win in The BEL Gold Cup

6/10/22

5   BEL   The BEL Gold Cup (GII)

$400.000    4yo&Up     1 1/2m Turf       123lbs

Twin TowersRacing’s Key Biscayne was my top choice in Friday’s The BEL Gold Cup (GII) and the bay gelding didn’t disappoint, closing doggedly down the lane and getting up to win by a length.  The final running time was 2:252 for the marathon mile and a half, on a turf course listed as firm.  Longshots grabbed the second and third positions as Outcross, dismissed at 10/1 also came from off of the pace to grab the runner-up spot, then three quarters of a length to Smoking Makes You Il, a nearly 30/1 shot, was third.  Lord City took the minor money in this one.

Key Biscayne is a 6yo bay gelded son of Overspender – Tropical Kiss, by Materialist, and he was bred by South Beach Racing in FLA..  Obtained by Twin TowersRacing via Private Purchase, for $35.000, back in May of 2020, and he now has six wins from twenty-eight starts and lifetime earnings of $622.370.  Congrats to the Connections!

Key Biscayne raced mid-pack to the far turn, responded when asked advancing to engage the leaders at the top of the lane, closed well 4p pulling away in the late stages.  Outcross lacked interest until entering the far turn, advanced through the turn fanning wide for the drive, good late effort, outkicked from the furlong marker.  Smoking Makes You Il trailed to the far turn, began to inch forward then fanned wide for the drive, best foot late closing widest of all. Lord City off a step slow then rushed up to press the pace as the entered the clubhouse turn, took the lead into the far turn, headed nearing the furlong marker, evenly to the finish.  Rotarian away well to press the early pace, fanned to 4p for the drive, tired.  Rowdy Rb broke alertly to set the early pace, headed going into the far turn, tired.  Plucky Flash was outrun throughout.
