Lock Away The Key Earns First Stakes Victory in Winkfield

While the speed in the Limehouse being slightly faster in his first try at a stakes event this season, the patience and extra furlong went a long way at bringing this three year old home his first stakes victory. For trainer Fractious, it was stakes win number two of the season as he would also add the Phoenix Gold Cup Hdcp. later in the day.

  • The Winkfield- Purse $100.000
  • Aqueduct Racetrack- For Three Year olds
  • Seven furlongs in distance- Main Track

Not being taken out closer to the front in this event as he has done in the past, Lock Away The Key with jockey Cancel decided a more stalking approach to this affair was the right fit for a later advancement down the stretch. Finally making his move with a furlong to run, the Fractious entry would find the wire in a final time of 1:22.04. I tried to catch up with the trainer following the event, but he was rushed off to another function.

Lock Away The Key stayed pretty much out of harms way down the backstretch, keeping just to the outside of Night Rider Stable’s Sexy Back. The two would go head to head all the way to the far turn, till Lock Away The Key would start to push to the front. I did manage to talk to Raj from Night Rider Stables about his impressions of Sexy Back. ” I was hoping he dropped back and make a run. He was pretty flat though. My plan is see how his next work goes, based on that work I’m going to plan his future, but gelding might be in the cards with him.” I do hope he finds the answer to getting this bay colt to focus late in the race.

Placing second would be Ngannou ( Mb Stables ) who like the winner, went off at a respectable 5-1 odds come post time. He was actually ahead of the eventual winner going into the far turn, and only gave up his position with seven tenths of a furlong to run as they both passed early front runner Serpent King ( Rampage Stable ) who would hang for the show purse. With Serpent King, the upfront style worked well in his maiden victory, but the added distance left him out of air late in the race. Aer Stable’s Steed would get the minor share of the winnings.
