Longshot Pxg Gets the Winn

Winn (Grade 3)- $150.000 Purse
CD- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
June 15, 2019

Pxg was making his graded stake debut in the Winn on Saturday, and he would end up being the longest shot on the board at odds of 20/1. Doubting his trainer, Mb Stables, especially in a small field such as this is probably not a good idea, and Pxg earnd Mb his third win in the last four editions of the race. Last year’s winner, Pass Me By goes in the auction on Sunday night. Jockey A Beschizza became a first time winner of the race. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:41.69, a median time when the conditions of the race were the same. Let’s take a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.91)- Our eventual winner, Pxg, wastes no time going out to grab the lead for his trainer, Mb Stables but does not over extend himself in the opening quarter. He has a length and a half advantage as they approach the backstretch, with John Henry’s pair of Twisted Aggravation and Instagooglefacetweet running side by side for second. It’s a similar distance back to Not To Be Denied (D J C Racing Stables) and Cherokee Reward (Estero Farms), who are also side by side early on.

(½ Mile- :47.50)- Running down the backstretch, Pxg is able to lead without anyone applying any pressure to him and he extends his advantage to two full lengths midway through. Twisted Aggravation pulls a head in front of his stablemate, Instagooglefacetweet. Meanwhile, Not To Be Denied is looking to get involved and begins a three wide move of those two at this portion of the race. Cherokee Reward is another length back and potentially thinking about making it four wide.

(Top Of Stretch, 2F To Go)- At the front, Pxg has gotten away from them and is looking to pull away even more in the stretch. Neither of the John Henry entries are posing any threat to him as he rounds the turn and enters the stretch. Twisted Aggravation was particularly struggling at this stage. Meanwhile, that move Not To Be Denied seemed like he was going to make never materialized, and the trainer may be wondering why. R Bejarano clearly called an audible from that, and backed him off and behind the John Henry stablemates, which in turn gave the three wide lane to Cherokee Reward. Eventually, Not To Be Denied comes between the stablemates, but not sure why this took so long, losing valuable ground and time to Pxg.

(Finish- 1:41.69)- In the stretch, Pxg did not have to be overpowering, he just needed to be good enough. And that he was to pick up the race win. Not To Be Denied and Instagooglefacetweet made up ground, but ran out of race track. That probably would not have been an issue for Not To Be Denied if he made that three wide move in the backstretch like it looked like he was going to do. Cherokee Reward is fourth but never threatened for more. Twisted Aggravation rounds it out.

About The Winner- Pxg, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by A Beschizza, is a three year old gelding by Laffin Five Oh, and is out of Peppermint Dove. He was bred in Texas by Broken Spoke Stables as a second quarter two year old, and acquired by Mb Stables, via Tiratzo, in private sales for $35.000 in February 2019. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in seven starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $166.100.
