It’s opening day at SAR and that means the 19th running of The Schuylerville-G3 will be the feature. The 6f contest for 2yo fillies carries a $175.000 purse and we drew a full field of a baker’s dozen with Believe Me Natalie stuck on the AE list. None of the fillies in here have won a graded stake so all will carry 118-pounds. Two-year old racing is sometimes hard to predict, and, this being a full 12-horse field, this one won’t be an easy assignment for handicappers; however, let’s take a look and see what The Schuylerville-G3 field looks like:
#1 Sioux Gathering (Rock Creek/I. Ortiz Jr): Broke her maiden in April debut then returned at BEL in $150.000 stake last month. Ran third after tracking the pace that day and draws well for this assignment. Gets a little extra credit for the debut score as the runner-up that day is drawn in the middle of the field for this.
#2 La Creepy Cat (Our Athletes/T. Gaffalione): Used a debut 3rd to get ready for $120.000 maiden-breaker three weeks ago at CD. Both races have seen her use stalking tactics and may be able to utilize those tactics from here in her first crack at winners.
#3 Off And On (Night Mare Racing/J.R. Velazquez): Made her debut in May (the latest of any horse in the field) before beating NY-breds last month. Faces winners for the first time in here, but she is drawn well to save ground, and she should have pace to rally into.
#4 Spun Around (Mb Stables/L. Saez): Debut winner hasn’t missed any dances as she followed-up April score with ITM finishes at the stakes level in May and June. Speedball may find herself in front again and she should be battle-tested for this first graded assignment.
#5 Apache Farm (El Primero Rodeo/J. Lezcano): 4th on debut at SA, she returned in May and bested WO foes for big money. She faces winners for the first time in this, but her works say she should be up for everything this group has to throw at her. Inner-half draw certainly doesn’t hurt her appeal.
#6 Tactfully (Mb Stables/J. Alvarado): Was a runner-up to the rail horse on debut and duplicated that performance a couple weeks later before breaking the maiden on her third try. She’ll face winners for the first time on Thursday, but her speed should help her get a good position.
#7 Long Term Parking (TwinTowersRacing/D. Davis): 6th on debut against NY-breds then took two cracks to break maiden at WO. Filly is one of a few in here that likes to settle and make one run, so her trip will be one to watch. Should be finding her best stride in the strech.
#8 Style (Fractious/J. Rosario): Fillie has had more owners than races, but current barn purchased her for $50.000 after her debut and was quickly rewarded with a CD MSW win. Faces winners for the first time, but several are in the same boat here. Speed is her game, so expect her to be involved from the jump.
#9 Proud Spell (Fractious/J.L. Ortiz): First crack at winners didn’t go so well when drawn 10 of 12, and she didn’t fare much better this time at the draw either. Should be better for the BEL experience last month and has worked well since. She’ll need to save some ground somewhere, but she should be rallying late.
#10 Perfect Illusion (Allinthegate/M. Franco): Filly’s rally fell just short on debut, but timed it right the second time around. That kind of trip will be difficult to navigate from out here, but the fact that she’s done it twice should give confidence. Just missed from the 9-hole, so maybe she’ll handle the trip just fine from here.
#11 Parade Leader (Fractious/R. Santana Jr): Homebred is the third entry from the barn but she may be the best chance they have. Just missed on debut before posting a neck-victory over CA-bred foes at SA. Facing winners is a new task for her, and doesn’t get any help with this draw, but she may be fast enough to clear.
#12 Lucky Star (Calia Stable/J.J. Castellano): Only filly in the field to have beaten winners, she took the Astoria at BEL last month. Filly has drawn inside of exactly one horse in what will be her fourth start, so the fact that she’s won from out here twice before makes her the horse to beat in here.
#13 Believe Me Natalie (Aarons Hosses/ALSO ELIGIBLE): Needs a defection to run, but filly looks to have talent. Was fast enough to be 2nd twice in 2f races before breaking her maiden in her 3rd start. Would face winners for the first time in here, but works look to be on par.
Final Analysis: Who Knows? We’ll go 7-12-11-1 but would not be shocked by any order of finish. Good luck to all involved in The Schuylerville-G3!
