Luminary Bursts Through With a 42-1 Bourbon Stunner

Luminary turned his turf and route debut into a stunning Grade II victory, tracking the early pace before steadily advancing and taking command in the final stage of the Bourbon. The two-year-old gelding won for owner/trainer Mb Stables and jockey Santana R Jr, rewarding his backers at approximately 42-1 while completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.05.

Race Recap

The $400.000 Bourbon – Grade II [BC], contested October 4, 2026 at Keeneland, brought together 10 two-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles over firm turf. The race produced a significant upset as Luminary defeated Trigger Happy Jack, Bold Imagination, Zee Command and Smokin Southern Bell to head the field.

The outcome was particularly noteworthy because Luminary entered the Bourbon without a previous turf or route start. His five earlier races had all been on dirt at distances ranging from 4 1/2 to seven furlongs, including appearances in the Grade II Saratoga Special and Grade I Hopeful. His most recent start had been a fifth in the Hopeful. The Bourbon therefore represented both a surface change and a substantial distance increase, and Luminary responded by producing the biggest victory of his young career.

Bold Imagination and Showman were the post-time co-favorites, each listed at 4.15 on the race chart. Bold Imagination performed considerably better of the pair, rallying from ninth to finish third, while Showman finished eighth.

The Running — Flow & Calls

First Call: Zee Command established the early lead, with Trigger Happy Jack second and Mexican Dawn third. Luminary began his afternoon in fourth, placing the eventual winner within striking distance of the leader rather than requiring a rally from the back of the field.

The Schema followed in fifth; Showman was sixth and Campania seventh. Smokin Southern Bell raced eighth, Bold Imagination was ninth and Sexy Snoop completed the field in tenth.

At this stage Zee Command controlled the race, while Trigger Happy Jack, Mexican Dawn and Luminary formed the next group.

Second Call: Zee Command continued to dictate the running and Trigger Happy Jack remained second. Luminary improved from fourth to third, beginning his gradual progression toward the lead.

The Schema advanced from fifth to fourth, while Mexican Dawn slipped from third to fifth. Showman remained sixth. Smokin Southern Bell improved from eighth to seventh, Campania dropped from seventh to eighth, Bold Imagination remained ninth and Sexy Snoop continued in tenth.

Luminary’s move was beginning to take shape. Rather than making one sudden charge, he had improved one position and was now directly behind Zee Command and Trigger Happy Jack.

Third Call: Zee Command was still in front, but his advantage had been reduced to a nose. Luminary continued his advance, moving from third to second and drawing almost even with the leader. Trigger Happy Jack slipped from second to third.

The Schema remained fourth, while Mexican Dawn stayed fifth and Showman remained sixth. Smokin Southern Bell held seventh.

Bold Imagination began to improve, advancing from ninth to eighth. Sexy Snoop moved from tenth to ninth, while Campania dropped to tenth.

The complexion of the Bourbon had now changed considerably. Zee Command still held the official lead, but Luminary had progressed from fourth to third to second and was poised immediately behind him entering the decisive stage.

Final Call: Luminary completed his methodical advance, moving from second into first and securing the Grade II victory.

Trigger Happy Jack, who had occupied second through the first two calls before dropping to third, responded to finish second. His performance continued an excellent beginning to his career, leaving him with two victories and a second from three starts.

Bold Imagination supplied one of the strongest late advances in the field. After sitting ninth through the first two calls and eighth at the third, the co-favorite surged to third.

Zee Command experienced the opposite trajectory. After leading through the first two calls and still holding a nose advantage at the third, he dropped to fourth.

Smokin Southern Bell improved from seventh to fifth during the final stage, while Sexy Snoop came from ninth to finish sixth.

Mexican Dawn, who had been third early, fell to fifth through the middle portion of the race and ultimately finished seventh.

Showman remained sixth through the second and third calls before finishing eighth. The co-favorite was unable to reproduce the late improvement shown by Bold Imagination.

The Schema had been fifth, fourth and fourth through the three calls but weakened to ninth during the final stage.

Campania completed the order. After beginning seventh, he dropped to eighth and then tenth before finishing tenth.

The defining progression belonged to Luminary: fourth at the first call, third at the second, second at the third and first at the finish. It was a steady advance that carried him past the early leaders and transformed a 42-1 outsider into a Grade II winner.
