Lunar Watch Wins Fourth Straight In Colonel Power

Colonel Power Stakes ($100.000 Purse)
FG- For Four Year Olds and Upward
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
February 19, 2022

Lunar Watch came into the Colonel Power on a three race winning streak, four wins in five, and finishing in the top two in his last six. The bettors did not think highly of chances to remain hot, and sent him off at odds of 39/1. It wasn’t as if this was a stake inexperienced horse, either, so it was a surprise to see him at those odds. In the Colonel Power, he would add another win to that streak, meaning that he probably should not go off at such a high price in his next race. He is trained by Black N Gold Stable and was ridden by E T Baird. Each of them claimed their first win in this race. Congratulations to them! The race was won in 1:02.02. That’s the third quickest time in the race’s history. Here’s a look at it!

(¼ Mile- :22.39)- Roman Rage would be the quickest starter, jumping out to an uncontested lead of a length and a half for Gdp Inc. He would have three stalking him, and one of them would be our eventual winner, Lunar Watch, for Black N Gold Stable. He would run on the rail, and Street Interest (Fractious) to his outside and Kathmandu (Angelos Stable) running in the third lane. After about another two lengths, Data Overload (Mb Stables) and Deaf Capo (Asgar) ran side by side. It was another half length to Gladys (Mb Stables), and at the rear of the field, it’s Dragon Storm (Bomberracing).

(Top Of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Around the turn and into the stretch, we do not see much change in how the field runs. Roman Rage is still in front with no one posing a threat to him. The lead has, in fact, grown at this point to be a full two lengths if not a little more. Lunar Watch and Kathmandu are heads apart for second, and Street Interest is trying to keep up as he runs between them. Further back, no one is coming and you had to wonder when any of them were going to make a move.

(Finish- 1:02.02)- Up until there was one furlong to go, it looked like Roman Rage was going to hold on, but he would show signs of fatigue late in the stretch as he began to drift a bit. This was perfect for Lunar Watch, meaning all that he had to do was stay on the rail to take his best shot at him. Everyone was gaining on Roman Rage, but no one who was already close to the front had the same kind of power in their stride as Lunar Watch. In the very last step, he would get up just in time to win this by a nose in a tight photo! Kathmandu was in the area to finish third, and it was a length to the fourth place Street INterest, who held off Data Overload and Dragon Storm. Deaf Capo and Gladys round it out.

About The Winner- Lunar Watch, trained by Black N Gold Stable and ridden to victory by E T Baird is a six year old gelding by Peppermint Moon and is out of Overwatch. He was bred in Louisiana by Allinthegate as a first quarter two year old and acquired by Black N Gold Stable, via Iwin Enterprise, for a $12.500 claim. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his 14th in 28 starts, and his third stake win but first since 2019. His career earnings are now $366.370.
