Maxmillion Farm Targets River City Handicap With Capable Trio

Churchill Downs – November 7, 2026

River City Handicap – (Grade lll)

Purse $300.00 – For Three Year Olds And Upward – 1 1/8 Miles – Turf

Six promising runners head to the starting gate this Saturday for the 22nd running of the River City Handicap with an opportunity to turn their potential into a first graded-stakes victory! This race has never changed venue, distance, surface, or grade designation since its inception in 2003. A significant change followed the 2020 edition when the purse increased from $100.00 to $300.00, making the River City Handicap a more lucrative target for owners seeking graded stakes success. No owner has won this race twice, but Mb Stables and Winning Link Stables each return with one entrant and a chance to claim a second victory that would put them alone atop the all-time owner leaderboard. The stakes record has stood since 2011 when Bottom Line powered away late to complete the 1 1/8-mile trip in 1:44.31, setting a standard that has remained unbeaten for 13 straight runnings. There looks to be plenty of rising talent entered this year. With ideal conditions expected this weekend, let’s take a closer look at each contender and see who might hold the edge.

  1. Soho Cat – (Maxmillion Farm, L. Saez) Soho Cat is the first of three entrants for Maxmillion Farm and was purchased privately from Ashwood Farms for $250.00 in October. The five-year-old has enjoyed a productive 2026 season with five wins and two seconds from eight starts. He earned a stakes victory over a mile at Santa Anita back in May before finishing second in a 7 1/2-furlong allowance at Lone Star. His last two appearances produced wins in a starter allowance and a 1 1/8-mile N2X. This California-bred controlled the pace throughout that latest outing, scoring by a length to demonstrate his comfort over this trip. Soho Car now seeks his first graded stakes win with sharp recent form and proven ability at the distance working in his favor.
  1. Mysterious Light – (Maxmillion Farm, I. Castillo) The second of three runners for Maxmillion Farm and was claimed for $20.00 back in January. Mysterious Light has finished first or second in four of his five appearances this season. He spent the spring sprinting on turf and came within a nose of winning a five-furlong N2X at Lone Star in April. Following a five-month break, this son of Cherokee Secret stretched out to 1 1/8 miles, rallying from sixth to score by a length with some new equipment. That effort delivered his first win of the year and showed that this distance is well within his range. Mysterious Light faces a stiffer class test here, but a similar performance would make him an interesting challenger. He actually dead-heated with Soho Cat last time out.
  1. Ged – (Mb Stables, R L. Moore) Ged will try to give Mb Stables a second River City Handicap victory after making his last two appearances in graded company. The four-year-old’s two wins this season include a three-length success over yielding turf at Monmouth in May. He followed that with a second in the Texas Turf, where he missed by just a nose over this same distance. A seventh-place finish in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1) came next, although this California-bred was only a length behind the winner. Ged’s latest outing produced a ninth in the Mint Million (G3) at Kentucky Downs after he raced near the rear for much of the journey. Returning to nine furlongs against a smaller field could help this gelding recapture the form that made him so competitive at Lone Star.
  1. Enigma Code – (Maxmillion Farm, L J. Luzzi) This son of Commanding The Storm completes Maxmillion Farm’s trio and is seeking his first victory in seven starts this year. Enigma Code has managed four placings during that stretch, with a runner-up finish over a mile at Woodbine. His experience at this distance includes a fourth in the Fort Marcy (G3), where he finished two lengths behind the winner. More recently, this Ontario-bred took sixth in a seven-furlong optional claimer despite being beaten only a length. Enigma Code then made up ground late to finish fourth in the Overskate Stakes last time out. He stretches back out to nine furlongs with those narrow margins suggesting this gelding is closer to a breakthrough than his finishing positions might imply.
  1. Good Vs Evil – (Team 7 Illusions, D. Cabrera) Brings the least experience in the field with just five starts for owner-breeder Team 7 Illusions. Good Vs Evil’s lone victory came in a 1 1/16-mile MSW at Ellis Park in August when he drew clear to score by three lengths. This son of Cherokee Devil followed that with a third in a one-mile optional claimer after advancing late from sixth. His latest appearance produced another encouraging finish as he rallied to take second by half a length in a $75.00 claiming race at Santa Anita. Good Vs Evil has placed in all three of his route attempts and now stretches out to nine furlongs for the first time. His consistency is encouraging, but this stakes debut requires him to prove he can be equally effective against stronger opposition.
  1. Woog – (Winning Link Stables, V. Espinoza) Woog represents Winning Link Stables and has won three of his seven starts this season. He opened the year with three consecutive victories over 1 1/16 miles on turf before his winning streak ended with a switch to dirt. Claimed for $45.00 at Del Mar in August, this gelding then missed by a neck in the Yellow Hammer Stakes on his first appearance for the new connections. He subsequently contested The Schiller at Belmont where he held a narrow stretch lead before fading to fifth. Woog has placed over nine furlongs in the past and possesses enough early speed to secure a forward position here. A stronger finish could put him in contention for his first graded stakes victory while giving his stable a second River City Handicap success.
