Mb Leaps Into Top Two Spots in Palm Beach

The Palm Beach Stakes (Grade 3)- $150.000 Purse
GP- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
February 29, 2020

There was plenty of reason to be excited about the Palm Beach Stakes with two reigning BC Champions taking on several other well accomplished horses despite just a $150.000 purse. This did leave the horses who may have wanted a smaller Grade 3 in a tough predicament, but it provided a good chance for them. In the end though, the BC winners finished first and third with the runner up another that just missed in the BC. The top two spots go to Mb Stables, who wins with Kimura here. It is his second win in the race, having also done so in 2017 with Clockwork Chai. Aboard the winner was R Bejarano, and it was his first win as well. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:39.74. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.29)- Awaiting breaks well for Chili King Stables, and is able to cross over to the rail soon into the first turn. He gets some company alongside him in the form Hawaiian Shirt Guy’s Hardline Hugo. They have a length advantage over a group of four stalkers spread out behind him. From inside to outside, this is Pontificate (John Henry), Whereismywaffle (Tiratzo), Stressed Out (Rampage Stable), and Eggs And Bacon (Mb Stables). There is a slight gap behind them to the next horse, which is Dream Vision (John Henry), who is a length in front of Mr Scratch (D J C Racing Stables) and Hollywood Estrella (Estero Farms). Our eventual winner, Kimura (Mb Stables) runs towards the back here, and in the fourth line while rounding the turn, and runs nearly six lengths behind Awaiting. The trailer, Lord Voldemort (Night Mare Racing) is about seven out.

(½ Mile- :46.61)- In the backstretch, each of the Mb Stables horses seem to get their cue to advance as the rest of the field is content to keep their pace. At the front, Eggs And Bacon moves up from the outside and runs even with Awaiting, while Kimura also passes a handful, starting with the three that he was initially behind, to now replacing Eggs And Bacon as the outside group in that original group of four stalkers from earlier. Not much else is happening at the moment, other then Hardline Hugo starting to look as though he was about to drop back already.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- At the top of the stretch, there was nothing left for Mb Stables to do but to sit back and wonder which of horses was going to win the race. Eggs And Bacon had gotten away from the rest of the field, as the other two pacesetters were dropping back, leaving him all by himself with a length and a half advantage. The only real threat to him at this time was his stablemate Kimura, who was cutting into his lead and looking pretty good at this point. Still, for Mb Stables, this was perfectly fine. Hollywood Estrella was starting to pick it up, but had an outside move to make in order to do so. He was now third, and perhaps a threat to Eggs And Bacon, but with Kimura also making an advance, Hollywood Estrella did not seem like a threat for the win. The pack was otherwise jumbled together with no one else looking like a major threat. Stressed Out and Dream Vision had a good lane to get by a few, but that was about it.

Finish (1:39.74)- Eggs And Bacon ran gamely to the wire, making his stablemate have to dig down and give everything he had in order to make the pass. Just before the wire, Kimura did make the pass, and gets credit for the win in a photo over Eggs And Bacon. Since these two ran well to the wire, there was no challenger to either of them. Hollywood Estrella is third, but it has more of a best of the rest feel to it. Dream Vision got close to him for fourth, and the rest of the field were really also rans today, more then usual, as this was not one of those races were everyone was a couple lengths apart. The rest of the order is Whereismywaffle, Stressed Out, Pontificate, Hardline Hugo, Lord Voldemort, Mr Scratch, and Awaiting.

About The Winner- Kimura, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by R Bejarano, is a three year old gelding by Sweep The Nebulae, and is out of the late Good Example. He was bred in Texas by Broken Spoke Stables, and acquired for just $8.000 by Mb Stables while he was still unraced, in private sales. The win is his fifth in six starts, his third stake win, and second graded win. His career earnings are now $801.200.
