Missed Looks Ready to Make His Mark in the Inaugural Stable Recovery Stakes

The Stable Recovery Stakes makes its inaugural appearance on Saturday, September 19, 2026, bringing together older runners at Parx Racing for 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. The open stake carries a purse of $150.00 and has attracted a nine-horse field with an interesting mixture of established stakes performers, improving runners and several horses entering in strong current form. With no previous edition of the race, Saturday’s winner will become the first horse to add the Stable Recovery Stakes to its record.

The Field

1. Better K P — Night Rider Stables — Hernandez R M

Projected Odds: 8-1

Better K P enters without a victory in five starts this year, but that statistic understates how consistently competitive the six-year-old has been. He has two seconds and three thirds in 2026, including a third at today’s exact 6 1/2-furlong distance at Churchill Downs and another third in his latest start at Saratoga. He was also beaten only a nose when second over six furlongs at Keeneland in April. His recent work pattern includes a 1:10 six-furlong move at Saratoga that ranked first of 31. Better K P has been repeatedly competitive without getting through for a victory, and the move into stakes company raises the difficulty again. He has a legitimate chance to hit the board and an outside chance to win if his consistency finally translates into a finishing breakthrough.

2. Missed — Bears Stable — Velazquez J R

Projected Odds: 5-2

Missed brings one of the strongest combinations of established sprint form and proven performance at 6 1/2 furlongs. The four-year-old has five wins, eight seconds and two thirds from 17 starts and has finished in the top three in every one of his five starts this year. Most importantly, he already owns a stakes victory at today’s exact distance, having led throughout the 6 1/2-furlong Cole Stakes at Sunland Park on April 25. He subsequently finished second in consecutive $100.000 stakes at six furlongs, leading through every intermediate call in both. His September 14 PRX work of :57.3 for five furlongs was third-fastest of 38. Velazquez J R takes the assignment for Bears Stable. Missed has a major winning chance and is the projected favorite because his current consistency, proven stakes form and demonstrated ability at 6 1/2 furlongs all fit this assignment particularly well.

3. Seasmoke — Mo Mentum Farm — Carmouche K

Projected Odds: 4-1

Seasmoke arrives after consecutive victories at seven furlongs, giving him one of the stronger recent form patterns in the field. He came from sixth to win a July 5 Saratoga claimer and followed by advancing from fourth to capture an allowance over a good Saratoga surface on August 6. The four-year-old also has direct evidence at 6 1/2 furlongs, finishing second in an allowance at Keeneland in April. His lifetime record stands at five victories from 17 starts, and he has two wins and two seconds from six outings this year. Carmouche K rides for Mo Mentum Farm. Seasmoke is a serious winning candidate; his ability to race effectively without requiring the early lead could become especially valuable if the front-runners apply pressure to one another.

4. Stone Of Tears — The Sidley Stud — Arroyo N Jr

Projected Odds: 10-1

Stone Of Tears has considerable versatility in his past performances, but his latest effort raises a question. He was prominent through the first three calls of the August 6 Morris Stakes over seven furlongs on a good Saratoga surface before fading to sixth. Earlier in the year, however, he won consecutive dirt races, including a front-running victory at Fair Grounds. He has four lifetime wins from 19 starts and two victories from five appearances in 2026. His September 5 preparation was a one-mile turf work, so he returns to dirt here after that training move. Arroyo N Jr rides for The Sidley Stud. Stone Of Tears has enough proven ability to contend, but his latest stakes performance and the amount of other speed in this field make him a more difficult win proposition.

5. Bleed The Freak — Alydar Stables — Lopez P

Projected Odds: 3-1

Few runners enter with better current winning form than Bleed The Freak. The four-year-old has won four of seven starts this season and comes into the Stable Recovery Stakes off consecutive route victories at 1 1/16 miles and 1 1/8 miles. He has also demonstrated sprint ability, winning at six furlongs in May after finishing second at that distance in April. His tactical profile is unmistakable: in his four most recent races he has repeatedly raced on or immediately around the lead. He has seven lifetime victories from 19 starts and prepared for this with a :57.4 five-furlong work at PRX on September 12, fastest of 28. Lopez P rides for Alydar Stables. Bleed The Freak has a strong winning chance, although shortening from consecutive route races to 6 1/2 furlongs while meeting several established sprinters presents a different test.

6. Baytown Compress — Lanfranco Stable — Pennington F

Projected Odds: 6-1

Baytown Compress is the lightly raced and intriguing member of the field. He has made only five lifetime starts but owns two victories and a third, and his June 6 performance came in the Grade III True North at today’s exact 6 1/2-furlong distance. He was eighth early and ninth at the second call before improving to sixth and finishing fourth. That graded-stakes exposure stands out in this field. Earlier, he won a 6 1/2-furlong allowance at Tampa after leading throughout. His recent six-furlong works have been consistently strong, including 1:10.1 at Los Alamitos and Del Mar. Pennington F retains the mount for Lanfranco Stable. Baytown Compress is a legitimate upset candidate: he has less racing experience than his rivals, but his exact-distance record and Grade III exposure give him a credible path to victory.

7. Capitaliste — Luz International — Gaffalione T

Projected Odds: 7-1

Capitaliste is the most experienced runner with 31 lifetime starts and seven victories. His current form is also solid: he has two wins, two seconds and a third from six starts this year. He enters after consecutive victories, coming from ninth to win at six furlongs at Albuquerque before progressing from fifth to win at 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga. At 6 1/2 furlongs earlier this year, he rallied from seventh to finish third at Sunland Park. That running pattern distinguishes him from several of the speed-oriented runners drawn around him. Gaffalione T rides for Luz International. Capitaliste has a meaningful winning chance, particularly if the early pace becomes demanding enough to enhance his late-running style.

8. Laffin Romantic — Ajm Stables — Sanchez M J

Projected Odds: 6-1

Laffin Romantic has been a prolific winner, taking six of 11 lifetime starts and five of seven during 2026. His five-race winning streak ended in the Morris Stakes on August 6, where he was seventh initially, sixth at the next two calls and finished fourth over a good seven-furlong surface. Before that, he had won at distances ranging from six furlongs through a mile. Of particular relevance, he captured a 6 1/2-furlong Churchill Downs allowance on June 11 after advancing from ninth to sixth and then taking the lead. Sanchez M J rides for Ajm Stables. Laffin Romantic is a genuine win contender whose ability to rally from behind the pace could work in his favor, and his five victories this season make the latest fourth-place finish easier to view in the context of an otherwise excellent campaign.

9. Roman Hound — TwinTowersRacing — Bridgmohan S X

Projected Odds: 15-1

Roman Hound brings five lifetime victories from 14 starts but must rebound from an eighth-place finish in a six-furlong allowance at Fairmount Park on July 28. Earlier this year he finished second at 5 1/2 furlongs at Sunland Park and won a six-furlong allowance at Fonner Park after moving to the lead at the second call. His past performances show that he can race close to the pace, but his latest effort represents a step backward from his stronger earlier races. Bridgmohan S X gets the mount for TwinTowersRacing. Roman Hound has an outside winning chance and would need a return to his better early-season form while stepping into a considerably stronger stakes setting.

Pace Structure & Race Outlook

The pace could be the defining element of this inaugural running. Missed has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to take command immediately and sustain his speed, including his 6 1/2-furlong stakes victory. Bleed The Freak is another natural forward presence and has spent much of his recent racing on or near the lead. Stone Of Tears also possesses front-running form, while Baytown Compress has previously won at this exact distance after leading throughout.

That combination makes a completely uncontested lead less likely.

Behind them, Seasmoke appears particularly well positioned. He has demonstrated that he can sit several lengths behind the early leaders before moving forward. Laffin Romantic has likewise won from farther back, and Capitaliste’s last two victories came after beginning fifth and ninth. Those three could become increasingly important if the leaders force one another to maintain pressure through the middle portion of the race.

Missed nevertheless has an important advantage: he has repeatedly faced sprint pressure and continued to finish first or second. He has finished in the top three in all five of his 2026 starts and has already won a stake at exactly 6 1/2 furlongs. That proven combination gives him a narrow edge over Bleed The Freak and Seasmoke.

Projected Finish

1. Missed — 5-2
2. Bleed The Freak — 3-1
3. Seasmoke — 4-1
4. Laffin Romantic — 6-1

Projected Winner: Missed — 5-2

Main Danger: Bleed The Freak — 3-1

Best Value: Laffin Romantic — 6-1

Live Longshot: Baytown Compress — 6-1

The inaugural Stable Recovery Stakes presents an interesting contrast between Missed’s established stakes-quality sprint speed, Bleed The Freak’s exceptional current winning form, and the stalking or closing capabilities of Seasmoke, Laffin Romantic and Capitaliste. Missed gets the narrow call because today’s 6 1/2-furlong dirt configuration is already a demonstrated strength, and his five consecutive top three finishes this season provide the most consistent recent evidence in the field.
