Nothing Lazy About Shoo Fly’s BC Juvenile Win

BC Juvenile (Grade 1) (KYD)- $2,000.000 Purse
KEE- For Colts and Geldings Two Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
November 4, 2022

Nine months ago, a horse named Rain Shower went to post at TUP for a new trainer, Lazy Eye. They had operated a virtual stable before, and had spent a lot of time in their preparations prior to their first race. On Saturday, there were no rain showers and nothing to dampen the parade for Lazy Eye, as he quickly would become a BC winning trainer. He can thank his talented colt, Shoo Fly, who was making the sixth start of his career and had entered the race off an impressive two length win in the Grade 1 Breeders Futurity. While he was not one of our picks, he still seemed to have a good shot, and in the BC it’s always about who is good that day as opposed to who’s been strongest entering the race. Now, Shoo Fly adds his name to the impressive list of BC Juvenile winners, and will be seen, for now, as the favorite for the KYD. So much can happen in six months, though, just like so much happened in nine months for Lazy Eye, going from his first race to winning a BC race. Shoo Fly’s jockey was A Bocachica, and like the trainer, it is their first win in the race. Congratulations to them! The race went in a time of 1:41.67. Let’s take a look at how it happened!

(1/4 Mile- :23.43)- The race begins with Loko Moko pouncing out to the early lead for South Shore Stables, and he wasn’t wasting any time trying to pull away from the field. He would have a two length lead down the front stretch and into the opening turn. Behind him, we saw the typical rows of four setting up. Forceamalu, running in the third lane for Arindel, is credited with second place at this point, with third going to Hippyheart’s Ben Nevis. Running between them is Phalanx, for Bigchief Stables, and on the outside is Spoiled for Mb Stables. Our next row of four does see Arindel’s Gorogue Laga looking a little more ambitious than the others on the outside, potentially seeking a run to the first group of horses. Among the other three is our eventual winner and also the post time favorite, Lazy Eye’s Shoo Fly. He is currently running in the second lane, positioned behind Phalanx and is unhurried at this time. Drop Off (Williams9) and Mamba (Mb Stables) run with them. Night Raider, not owned by Night Rider, but for Mb Stables, is next, then comes Peace Pipe (Arindel), who shocked many with his poor run in this race. Spirit Believer (Nakamura Stables), State Of Fury (Alydar Stables), and Twin Rackers (Alydar Stables) are the trailers.

(½ Mile- :47.08)- Heading down the backstretch, Loko Moko is still the race leader, and is showing no signs of letting up. His lead remains two lengths, and we still have a group of four running behind him. Forceamalu is still slightly ahead of the others in this group, and Spoiled is right alongside. On the rail, Ben Nevis is getting up with them, but the same cannot be said for Phalanx, who is starting to drop back from them ever so slightly. Gorogue Laga is runnign between the original groups of four now, and does so while running five wide. Down the backstretch, Peace Pipe was looking good and made an aggressive push forward to become the new horse in the middle group of four. Shoo Fly continues to wait for his time to strike, riding it out right behind Phalanx, but you had to wonder if jockey A Bocachica would need to alter this plan with Phalanx possibly showing signs of fatigue. Meanwhile, Mamba continued to run with them, but Drop Off was starting to live up to his name. Further back, we had not seen much out of Twin Rackets, Night Raider, Spirit Believer, or State Of Fury.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Up front, Loko Moko is still up front, but his lead has been cut by a length as Forceamalu draws closer. Both of these two were looking strong and figured to be factors at the wire. Spoiled lost a half length to Forceamalu in the turn, but that is nothing that could not be made back up with a strong stretch run. Gorogue Laga was committed to the five wide move at this point, and would have to try and make it work now. He seemed to be doing well with it, though. Phalanx ran better than I thought he would in the turn and Ben Nevis continued to have a consistent run, but lost ground to those he was running with previously. As this was going on, there became an opening between those two, and Shoo Fly was more than happy to see that. A Bocachica would capitalize on that gap, and push Shoo Fly through, leaving his horse about two lengths from the lead at the top of the stretch. Mamba, who had been right alongside Shoo Fly for much of the race was coming up empty. Peace Pipe was poor in the turn, and if anyone else was going to make a move, they needed to get rolling now! State Of Fury and Twin Rackets are known closers to this point, but if they had anything to say about the outcome at the front, they had to begin to show that powerful push now.

(Finish- 1:41.67)- In the stretch, Shoo Fly would shoo away all of his rivals emphatically en route to getting the win. When he entered the stretch, he certainly looked like he was a strong contender for the victory, but what was unexpected was the way he pulled away from the field, putting them away very quickly. He ends up scoring a two length victory, and looked like he will thrive with longer distances as we go into the three year prep race campaign. A very impressive performance to become a BC champion! Gorogue Laga finishes second, and let’s not forget how much extra race track he covered in this race. His stablemate, Forceamalu had a good run as well to be third, and Loko Moko ran well enough to the wire to get the fourth place check. It was almost two lengths back from him to where we start to see others in the field, including a fifth place dead heat between Ben Nevis and Phalanx, each narrowly ahead of Spoiled. Those who ran behind Spoiled are going to have their trainers very disappointed in their efforts, at least until their next race. Mamba, Spirit Believer, State Of Fury, Night Raider, and Twin Rackets were next. Drop Off was overmatched, and what in the world happened to Peace Pipe? Last time we pick him!

About The Winner- Shoo Fly, trained by Lazy Eye and ridden to victory by A Bocachica, is a three year old colt by T S Day, and is out of Butter. He was bred as a yearling by his trainer in California, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in six starts, two of them being graded victories. His career earnings jump to $1,634.000.
