Old Dominion Derby – Grade III
CNL Race #1 1 1/8m Turf Graded Stake
Purse $500.00 For Three Year Olds.
1. Trojan Horse – Family Racing – Jockey: Franco M
Works
Trojan Horse has been busy and sharp on turf, with four consecutive August turf works:
- 30 Aug PRX – 5f turf – :57.4 (2/15)
- 25 Aug PRX – 6f turf – 1:10.2 (4/17)
- 9 Aug MTH – 5f turf – :58 (2/23) These are fast, purposeful works, showing he’s fit and holding form.
Race Form
His 2026 turf form is consistent, but mostly at 5–6f. Best recent run: Mahony (G3) – 3rd with a 97 fig, but again sprinting. Route turf efforts are honest but lack a finishing punch.
Jockey Form
Franco M: 313 rides / 41 wins (.13) Reliable, but not a top‑tier strike rate. Capable of a good tactical ride.
Trainer Form
Family Racing: 521 starters / 72 wins (.14) Solid mid‑range barn. Horses are fit and well‑prepared, but not a high‑percentage outfit.
Preview Verdict
Sharp works, honest form, but distance is the question. More of a board hitter than a win threat.
2. Gran Coffee Party – Threshold – Jockey: Esquivel E
Works
Recent turf work shows fitness:
- 30 Aug PRX – 6f turf – 1:10.2 (6/25) Earlier works show steady conditioning, including a 1:34 turf mile at AQU in April.
Race Form
Two strong turf routes in 2026:
- Statebred Violet – 2nd, 96 fig
- PEN Mile (G3) – 5th, 98 fig He’s improving, and his best races are at 8.5–9f.
Jockey Form
Esquivel E: 119 rides / 28 wins (.24) Very strong strike rate. A rider in form, especially on turf.
Trainer Form
Threshold: 1395 starters / 236 wins (.17) High‑volume barn, not a reliable source of top class horses.
Preview Verdict
Bought from a $5 claimer he has certainly proved to be better than that but has yet to win for the new stable that paid 10X the claim to bring him to their barn. Should be OK at the nine furlongs.
3. Mr Milchick – Mb Stables – Jockey: Husbands M J
Works
DMR turf works are excellent:
- 31 Aug – 6f turf – 1:09.4 (9/34)
- 20 Aug – 1 mile turf – 1:35.1 These are serious route works, showing stamina and readiness.
Race Form
True router with multiple strong 1⅛‑mile runs:
- DMR 1⅛m – 97 fig
- LS 7.5f turf win – 98 fig Graded form is consistent and competitive.
Jockey Form
Husbands M J: 72 rides / 14 wins (.19) Good strike rate, experienced in turf routes.
Trainer Form
Mb Stables: 1786 starters / 473 wins (.26) Elite barn. High win percentage, excellent conditioning, and strong graded stakes results.
Preview Verdict
Top‑tier works, top‑tier barn, proven at the distance. Major win threat.
4. Shin Lim – Threshold – Jockey: Toledo Je
Works
Outstanding recent turf work:
- 30 Aug DMR – 7f turf – 1:22.1 (1/6) This is a bullet turf route work, signalling sharpness and improvement.
Race Form
Lightly raced but improving:
- GP Allowance win – 88 fig
- Consistent turf route form, always finishing strongly.
Jockey Form
Toledo Je: 741 rides / 223 wins (.30) In hot form on the lower tracks, gets the chance to prove himself in the top tier.
Trainer Form
Threshold: 1395 starters / 236 wins (.17)
Preview Verdict
Huge recent work + busy winning travelling jockey = dangerous improver. The gap in races will be his biggest enemy and he may need this run but he can close strongly and if he has a flicker of a class gene he may find that a more forward instruction today could pay dividends.
5. Ethereum Hack – Family Racing – Jockey: Zayas E J
Works
Exceptional turf works:
- 3 Sep PRX – 6f turf – 1:09.3 (1/13)
- 29 Aug MTH – 6f turf – 1:09.2 (1/7) These are elite turf route works, showing peak fitness.
Race Form
2026 form is excellent:
- NYSS Series – 3rd, 96 fig
- Multiple strong 8.5–9f dirt/turf crossover runs He’s consistent, improving, and proven at the distance.
Jockey Form
Zayas E J: 265 rides / 43 wins (.16) Solid, experienced, especially with Family Racing horses.
Trainer Form
Family Racing: 521 starters / 72 wins (.14) Reliable barn; horses typically show strong late‑season improvement.
Preview Verdict
Best recent works in the field, strong route form, and peaking at the right time. Top contender. Just the one turf start but it was a good one! Winning chance.
Race Summary
A disappointing field of only five, I guess there are only so many turf three year olds out there and believe it or not this is one of the smaller purses available this week. This looks a good opportunity for someone to get a good pay day and it may come down to Family Racing and Mb Stables. If Gran Coffee Party was running out of Mb Stables I would make him the winner with his nice draw but as he isn’t, so maybe, the odds are against him.
Pace could be key here in this small field and I would expect the Mb runner to be set into the speed and it is pretty normal to see that stables runners making all and holding on so that would be my best guess, although it wouldn’t take much for one of the other two stables here to use one of theirs to try and steal the race.
