Only Three Run in Breeders Stakes

Breeders Stakes- $400.000 Purse
WO- For Three Year Olds Foaled in Canada
One Mile and One Half on the Turf
August 17, 2019

Initially, there were six runners for the Breeders Stakes, but Mb Stables scratched all of his entrants, leaving us with just three. The race would still be run, and after twelve furlongs on the yielding grass surface, it would be Tourniquet scoring the victory. It is the first win for both Mo Mentum Farm and jockey T C Baze. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 2:30.30. Here’s a brief look at how it happened, as I am not going to spend much time breaking down a three horse race.

1st- 4- Tourniquet (40/1)- Initially, the Mo Mentum Farm entry ran near his rivals, but as they moved around the opening turn, he dropped off the pace considerably, and would have a gap of five lengths to the front at the top of the backstretch. During the backstretch, he held his own, keeping the distance between he and Equivocal constant. Nearing the turn, Van Wilder was starting to drop back to him, and he would make the pass for second in the turn. At the top of the stretch, he had only made slight progress on Equivocal, but was gearing up for a strong run. That run would come, especially in the final furlong and a half of the race, as he was considerably better at this time. This would lead him making a pass for Equivocal that was smooth as the challenger could not put up a fight. He goes on to win by a length!

2nd- 5- Equivocal (1/10)- The heavy favorite took the early lead for Smokey Stover, and moved into the backstretch with about a two length lead. He would only extend this advantage over the backstretch, and began the run around the turn with a three and a half length cushion over Van Wilder. Seemed to handle the turn in a comfortable manner, and still had a four length cushion as they moved into the stretch. This would not be enough, as he would tire in the stretch, and had no answer for Tourniquet.

3rd- 3- Van Wilder (7/2)- Ran second in the early going for Fractious, content to sit just off the lead as they moved into the backstretch. He would never put pressure on Equivocal over the backstretch, and as they got closer to the final turn, he would lose ground rather then gain. Faded in the turn, making the three horse race really only a two horse race in the stretch.

About The Winner- Tourniquet, trained by Mo Mentum Farm and ridden by T C Baze, is a three year old gelding by Shark Force, and is out of Icy Heart. He was bred in Ontario as a third quarter two year old by Mo Mentum Farm, the only trainer for which he has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in ten starts (he is 2-for-3 since the geld), and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $304.730.
