Let’s go to the Spa! Saturday’s graded stakes action invades upstate New York as eleven juveniles look to take down the $150.000 G3 Sanford over six furlongs on the dirt at SAR. The purse isn’t the only thing on the line as the winner of this one nabs four points for the BC Juvenile while the place and show finishers get two points and one point, respectively. Two trainers (Mb Stables-2013, 2020; Team 7 Illusions-2016, 2018) have won this historic race on multiple occasions and three jockeys have taken down two editions of this marquee juvenile event. This year’s group oozes potential so let’s meet the field for the 2021 edition of the G3 Sanford:
#1 Statuesque (Mb Stables/A. Beschizza 118): Gelded son of General Ferro comes here off of a 3rd place finish in June 4 $150.000 Tremont at BEL. Set the pace that day before tiring in the last 100 yards. Has the advantageous draw and the speed to utilize it to its full potential.
#2 Disciplinary (Tiratzo/D.E. Centeno 118): Commanding colt took two attempts at the MSW level, but ran very well both times. In the debut he flashed speed before settling for the place; however, showed a different dimension in the maiden-breaker where he rallied from well off to score by 1/2 length. Drawn well and could be dangerous from just off the pace.
#3 Liberia (Waldo/D. Cohen 118): Another that took two attempts at breaking his maiden, the Wheep gelding just missed in the debut at CT before the WO score. In both of those, he displayed a nice turn of foot to make up ground in the stretch. Faces better here, but acts like one that is going to make his run every time.
#4 Junkyard Dog (Jive Inc/M.J. Sanchez 118): Pinkman gelding ran 4th on debut at SA before returning to score in a MSW at CD. Sire is known for his speed and appears to have passed that on to this son. Has to go a full furlong than he has run before, but appears as another that is in with a shot.
#5 Loquacious Luka (Night Rider Stables/E. Cancel 118): Broke his maiden at HAW before returning on June 4 in the Tremont at BEL. Made a good run to just miss by a nose in that one and if the Bay Of Plenty colt can replicate that performance, he could be dangerous here.
#6 Segway Hippo (Woogaloo/J. Lezcano 118): Debuted at GG going two furlongs in April before July 4 return score going today’s trip at WO. Obviously a quick turn-around here, but this juvenile is obviously talented as well. If the Scion Of Decima gelding doesn’t show any damage from that recent effort, he certainly can get at least a piece of this.
#7 Orange Chicken (Arindel/R. Santana Jr 118): One of the most talked-about horses in his crop, this Aggravation gelding has done very little wrong thus far. Second on debut before taking a CD MSW, he returned to CD on June 26 in the G3 Bashford Manner where he fell a nose short. Another in this on short rest, but yet another that can not be dismissed either.
#8 Knockout (Mb Stables/J. Alvarado 118): Son of Sweet Sweat ran 3rd on debut before scoring in his latest on June 13 at CD in a high-dollar MSW. Has to navigate an extra furlong today, but has done nothing to dispel the notion that this trip is well within his scope. Another good-looking juvenile in this fine renewal.
#9 Luck Of The Draw (Maxmillion Farm/K. Carmouche 118): Oddly, this Nebula Fire gelding is the only horse in the race NOT running for his breeder. Purchased for $33.010 via the June auction, this will be his first try for the new connections. Took a trip around to figure it out, but the second start victory seems to be the theme in here. Any improvement on the June 26 work makes him a serious player in this one.
#10 Paco (D J C Racing Stables/S. Ryan 118): The first of our two-time winners, this son of Que Niagra took the April 28 $125.000 KY Juvenile before disappointing as the favorite in the G3 Bashford Manor. Displayed brilliance at 41/2 and 5 furlongs so that latest CD try may just be a throwout.
#11 Croton Road (Fractious): SCRATCHED
#12 Bronze Slayer (The Sidley Stud/J.R. Leparoux 118): Another two-time winner, the gelded son of Silver Slayer at least gets to move inside one gate. Took his debut at CT before running the only dud of his career in the aforementioned KY Juvenile. Bounced out of that race nicely when taking down the $75.000 FT Futurity at SA on June 20. The horse from SA can compete in here despite the draw; the horse from CD can not compete in this. Your call.
