Out On A Limb Defies the Odds in The Whitney

The Whitney – Grade I [BC]
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $1,200.000 Open 3 Year Olds And Up.

1st   Out On A Limb  Jader Stable  Pennington F  14.30

Well this race bucked just about every trend HRP has become infamous for in the past season or two. Almost impossible to win from a wide gate……almost impossible to beat three’s at weight for age…..almost impossible to buy a good horse for ten bucks…..and finally almost impossible to beat the big stables with a small barn. This horse beat not just one but every single one of those seemingly impossible mountains  to get home for what in the end was a pretty comfortable one length win. A winner of the grade two CD in the mud he was clearly favoured by the ground and whilst he is a little inconsistent his second in the BC Dirt Mile last year proves the ability was there to take a big win like this.

2nd   Bay Of Plenty  Team 7 Illusions  Bejarano R  3.90

Looked like he may take the win after leading at the furlong pole but he could not quicken with the eventual winner and had to settle for a brave second in the end. He is a consistent work horse and proves once again just how versatile he is in running second here after spending much of his early career as a sprinter.

3rd   Stranger  D J C Racing Stables  Lopez P  4.40

This great old horse was one of the few closing on the leaders at the end and with another furlong may have pulled off a famous win. He just keeps on going and will no doubt be a force come November.

4th   Bronx Bomber  Aer Stables  Talamo J  7.80

The enigma continues with this horse as he once again found a few too good in the end. Going up on the pace from his widish draw it was always going to be tough for him to see the race out but he looked a winner for a long time before weakening at the end.
