All eight of the horses in the NY were more than capable of winning the race. Some may have been a little more known then others, but this had the makings of a great race. It was certainly not a surprise that the red hot Perfectly Pink was the winner, but the fact that she cruised to a three to four length victory was an eye opener. Ever since The Freakshow added her in the auction nine months ago, she’s won seven of eight, and was within a half length of making it a perfect stretch. Short or long, it hasn’t mattered, and after beating this crowd so convincingly, she may have just become an early favorite for the BC Fillies & Mares Turf. It is the first win in the race for The Freakshow and jockey J C Ferrer, and the race was won in a time of 1:58.50, tying the stake record. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :47.53)- Our eventual winner from The Freakshow, Perfectly Pink, will also be the early leader of the race as she jumps out to a length and a half lead right from the gate. This advantage would continue down the front stretch and around the opening turn. Number Nine holds the second spot for Smokey Stover, and positions herself a lane to the outside of the leader. The post time favorite, Maletto’s Always Condottieri is third on the rail, and within a half length of her is the former winner, Maggie Greene, from The Sidley Stud. Longshot Wbf No Regrets (TwinTowersRacing) runs fifth in the middle of the field. Then, it’s Zalinda (Threshold), Maya Caribe (First Flight Stable), and Shining Moments (RNP Stables).
(3/4 Mile- 1:10.86)- Perfectly Pink is perfectly content on the front end, and has no one challenging her for the lead. The lead is still a length or so to Number Nine, as that one stalks her, but has not made a move to challenge for the top spot. Always Condottieri had been closer to these two, but she loses ground in the backstretch and that could be said for Maggie Greene as well as these two continue to run side by side. Wbf No Regrets runs together with Zalinda, and these two are still five lengths behind the leader. Maya Caribe and Shining Moments are another length back.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- The Freakshow was surely a happy trainer as his mare moved around the final turn because the gap to Number Nine was growing with every stride. Of course, the trainer has gotten used to this with Perfectly Pink, and to put away a horse like Number Nine right now with no one else emerging as a threat likely meant the race was in the bag before they even ran in the stretch. There was no new challenger, as third place Maggie Greene was also falling further behind and Always Condottieri had packed it in. At this point, then, you’re looking back to the likes of Wbf No Regret and Zalinda and while they were maintaining their distance to the front, they were not making a push, at all. Nor were Maya Caribe and Shining Moments.
(Finish- 1:58.50)- Would anything unexpected happen in the stretch? Not at all! Perfectly Pink maintained her perfect stride, and everyone else was too far back. The Grade 1 NY was going to belong to her and The Freakshow, as she convincingly wins by 3 ½ lengths. Wbf No Regrets came through the pack, as did Zalinda, and the only drama would be which of them would be complete the exacta. In a photo, it’s Wbf No Regret with the spot, and Zalinda third. Number Nine takes fourth place spoils, ahead of non-factors Shining Moments, Maya Caribe, Maggie Greene, and getting the groans from the grandstand, Always Condottieri.
About The Winner- Perfectly Pink, trained by The Freakshow and ridden to victory by J C Ferrer, is a five year old mare by Perfect Command is out of the late Pink Rain. She was bred by Allinthegate as a second quarter two year old in New York and acquired by The Freakshow in the September 2021 auction for $16.030. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eighth in 20 starts, her fourth stake win, and third graded win. Her career earnings are now $876.960.
