Pink Condor Goes Wire to Wire in Simpson Stakes

Simpson Stakes (Grade 3)- $500.000 Purse
KD- For Three Year Olds
Six and a half Furlongs on the Turf
September 12, 2019

Heading into the Simpson Stakes, we felt that Pink Condor would be the horse to beat, thanks in large part to his strong effort in the Highlander Stakes two starts prior. He would have decent odds of 5/1 for the race, as the betting public seemed to prefer each of the entries from Mb Stables. The gelding from Axeman showed why he had her support, and went wire to wire for the win. Congratulations to Axeman in winning this, the inaugural running of the Simpson Stakes. The winning time was 1:14.33. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.34)- Pink Condor is quick out of the gate and takes the lead right away for Axeman. Our eventual winner would soon open up a length advantage over the rest of the field as they prepared to move around this long turn. Behind him, they ran three wide, with John Henry’s Storming on the inside, Crack Dab in the middle for Gdp Inc, and Our Athlete’s Man Childe running on the outside. It was two lengths back to the fifth place Kaizoku. The post time favorite, Defunct Things (Mb Stables) and Venture Bay (Gdp Inc) ran at the back of the pack.

(½ Mile- :45.99, Top of Stretch 2F To Go)- Running around the turn, Pink Condor was looking very impressive has he held on to his lead. There was no one able to make a run at him and challenge him, so by the time they hit the top of the stretch his length lead was still in tact, and even added to just a little bit. The three wide group of Storming, Crack Dab, and Man Childe were still running together, but not making any headway on the leader. Venture Bay moved up to the fifth position, with Defunct Things running to his inside, and now Kaizoku was at the back.

(Finish- 1:14.33)- In the stretch, there would be no catching Pink Condor, who put forth a very workmanlike effort to get the victory today. As he got closer to the wire, there was increased pressure coming in the form of Man Childe, and it almost looked like he would have time to get up for the win, but the wire came up just a little too soon for him. It’s a big win for Pink Condor as he prevails. Neither Storming or Crack Dab made a move forward, but they will still finish 3rd and fourth. Defunct Things and Venture Bay dead heat for the fifth, ahead of Kaizoku.

About The Winner- Pink Condor, trained by Axeman and ridden to victory by Alan Garcia, is a three year old gelding by Pink Panther, and is out of Sheknowsitall. He was bred in Ontario by Axeman as a yearling, the only trainer for which he has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fifth in 15 starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $536.680.
