Pirate On Fire Continues His ” One -Two Punch”

Some horses have a way of racing that can follow a pattern on a consistent bases, and you wonder how they do it? That’s exactly what Drabfantasy’s bay colt Pirate On Fire ( Romantic Pirate ) did here at Zia Park on Sunday, walking away with the NM Classic Cup Derby.

  • NM Classic Cup Derby- Purse $145.000
  • Zia Park Racetrack – For Three Year olds, Foaled in NM
  • Six Furlongs- Main Track

Over his past five events including this race, Pirate On Fire has won a race, then runner-up, then added another win, then runner-up, and finally a victory once again. Granted his trainer was wishing that all five would have been victories, but the horse has a consistency about himself and it will be interesting to see if this streak continues. His record this season in eight starts is (3-3-0 ) with a total of $131.600 in earnings. He is definitely maturing nicely. He also now holds the record for this event with a final time of 1:09.07 as well, Impressive. As for his trainer, this is his second time his name get inscribed on the trophy, he won back in 2015 with Broomstick Force, and with the assistance of rider Juarez.

Going runner-up would be T Boy Racing’s Timber Rattler. While he was able to beat the eventual winner earlier in the season over a muddy surface at RUI, he would have to settle for coming up short by three quarters of a length. You can bet this rivalry will continue into the future and add for more exciting racing.

Show was awarded to Hurricane Laffin ( Greeko Holdem ) as he was keeping pace with the top two finishers, and only missed by a quarter of a length at grabbing the second place finish. With just his only win coming in his maiden this season, and this being just his first ever stakes try, a length shy at the end is quite a brilliant accomplishment.

The final runner was John Henry’s Opus Dane who seems to be having a issue with adjusting to his new surroundings. He definitely has shown his talents in the past, but this is now his second fourth place finish, and his trainer would like nothing more then to get him back to his winning ways.
