Pocantico Returns in The Davis Stakes

The Davis Stakes – GIII [KYD]
2/6/21
TAM Race 15 1 1/16M – Dirt
Purse $250.000
Three Year Olds

Here we have a full field of twelve for this years running of the grade three Davis Stakes here at Tampa Bay and we have some Derby points available for the top finishers in this field. Let’s take a look at the field.

1. Irrational Rubicon (7-2-1-1 $67.320), trained by Arindel

First up in the field here and this runner is coming back to open company after a couple of statebred races in a row. He won at six furlongs last time and is no stretching out once again. Don’t see him doing much in this field.

2. Speter (5-1-3-0 $71.300), trained by Estero Farms

Next up in the field here and this horse is coming into this race off of a eighth place finish in the LA Futurity. HD ran well that day and with the new engine if he runs like last time being on the lead may help him. Going to have to run big though.

3. Burnin Red Hooves (7-2-0-0 $117.000), trained by TwinTowers Racing

And now to this horse here and he is coming into this race off of a fast closing fourth in the Remsen about two months ago. He has ran with the best in his short career and if he can get a good trip he may have a chance in here.

4. Distorted Humor (7-2-1-1 $43.670), trained by D J C Racing Stables

Looks like the geld may have done the trick for this horse as he has won two in a row since the snip. Granted against much weaker fields so he will have to step up and run a huge race to have any shot at winning in here.

5. Crack Danz (7-3-0-1 $282.260), trained by Fractious

Grade one winner in this field here and he will be making his second start for the new barn here. Obviously a very talented runner and should be one of the favorites here and I expect him to run a pretty good race here.

6. Rockin Rodeo (2-1-1-0 $22.250), trained by Patterson Stables

A super light raced horse here with only two starts and his last race was a second in an allowance optional claimer here at Tampa. Needs more experience I think before he can handle a field of this caliber.

7. Diplomacy Rules (2-1-0-0 $0.000), trained by Nakamura Stables

Another super light raced horse also with only two career starts and his only win was at the free track going five furlongs on the grass. Just do not see him having much of a chance in this field.

8. Poor Spaniard (4-2-1-1 $68.200), trained by La Canada Racehorses

Now up to this horse here and he is coming into this race off of a third place finish in a statebred stakes race at Los Alamitos. He seems to be a decent horse but he looks a little outmatched in this field to me.

9. Shelter At Home (4-3-0-1 $83.800), trained by D J C Racing Stables

Second in this field for D J C Racing Stables right here and he is coming into this race off of three wins in a row including a statebred stakes race over at Aqueduct. Next won over a distance though so that is the big question for him.

10. Clubhouse (6-2-1-1 $46.460), trained by Crocker Ggs

Last out winner here in an allowance optional claimer at Sam Houston in his last start but he was claimed only four starts ago. Going to need to step up big time if he wants to have any shot at winning in here.

11. Pocantico (8-4-1-0 $1431.510), trained by Smokey Stover

The Breeders Cup Juvenile winner right here and he is going to be making his first start since that huge win and of the year. He is obviously the horse to beat and is my top choice to win this race.

12. Tombstone (7-1-2-0 $30.980), trained by Nakamura Stables

Final in the field here and he has drawn a bad post and is making his first start against stakes company. Looks to be outmatched in here to me and I do not see him doing much with this field.

13. Nevada Silver (2-1-0-0 $0.000), trained by Nakamura Stables

Also Eligible

Summary

Obviously a key race on the road to the Derby but Pocantico is the horse to beat here and the obvious choice in this field. Good luck to all in the race.
