Quakerce and Sir Daniel Martin Take Juvenile Filles Turf

BC Juvenile Fillies Turf (Grade 1)- $1,000.000 Purse
DMR- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile on the Turf
November 3, 2017

The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf got us started with the official BC races on Friday at DMR, and amid the shadows of the more accomplished and successful trainers in the game, the top three spots belonged to Sir Daniel Martin and Estero Farms. For Sir Daniel Martin, the result was particularly impressive in that it was his first career BC win, and the second would come just a little later on the card, in the Juvenile Turf. So, we may have a new superstar trainer on the grass to talk about pretty soon. Getting the job done for him in this race was Quakerce, who had come into the race winning three of the four, so for her to be 16/1 was a little bit of a surprise. Congratulations to Sir Daniel Martin on your remarkable achievement. I don’t have the other Juvenile Turf to cover, but congratulations on this incredible double as well! The winning trainer was T C Baze, and the time of the race was 1:33.41. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.16)- We’re off in the 2017 BC, and the outside push is working pretty well for Apricot (Team 7 Illusions), Skeleton Abra (Chili King Stables), and Speeding Tales (Cherrytree Hill Farm). They are the quickest out of the gate, and as we move into the turn, it is Apricot leading with Skeleton Abrsa to her inside. Speeding Tales falls back a length. Broomsticks Concerto (Drabfantasy) put in a light challenge to them fresh out of the gate, but dropped back to run three wide in stalking position with the fillies that would eventually finish first and second: Quackerce (Sir Daniel Martin) and Crown Of Light (Estero Farms). They were stalked by another three wide group, consisting of Maggie Greene (The Sidley Stud), Dalitierri Girl (Hawaiian Shirt Guy), and Quiver Pond (Estero Farms). All of them were within four lengths. Then, we had a gap of nearly three to those not as interested in early speed. Blonde Art (Barcelona Farms), Chai Mission (Maxmillion Farm), Sweet Gail (Smokey Stover), Agenda (Mb Stables), and Unsuited Rainbow (Barcelona Farms) round out the order.

(½ Mile- :46.40)- There is primarily one horse making a noteworthy move at this point, and not surprisingly that is Quakerce. The three pacesetters continue to lead the way into the backstretch, but Quakerce decides its time to leave the company that she had been keeping before, and pulled up right to the tail of the leading Apricot. She was now within a length and a half from the lead, and less then a length from second. More important, she put a little ground between her and Crown Of Light, who would finish second. Crown Of Light began to respond to Quakerce though, but did not have the same room as the winner did due to Skeleton Abra clogging the lane. Other movement saw those who had been near the back close the gap that had existed early between them and the rest of the field. Maggie Greene seemed to have a great lane if she had pounced on it right here.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5 To Go)- Quakerce continues the forward progress late into the backstretch, and as the field begins the run into the lead, she takes advantage of Skeleton Abra slamming on the brakes to get to the rail and easily complete the pass of Apricot. Apricot also must have saw the same danger ahead, and also slammed on the brakes at this point. With nothing but clear traffic actually ahead, Quakerce powerfully handled the turn and emerged at the top of the stretch with a length and a half lead on Crown Of Light. For Crown Of Light, she had done well to keep away from those in retreat, but could not do so quite as cleanly. On the outside, Speeding Tales was a little more competitive then the other pace setters. Other stalkers, namely Broomsticks Concerto, Dalitierri Girl, and Quiver Pond had to move over and go a bit wide in the turn to avoid running into Apricot. Maggie Greene had the same trouble, though on the inside. None of the trailers were making moves quite yet, and it was going to be hard for them to do so at this point since the field was already getting spread out with retreating pacesetters coming down the middle.

(Finish- 1:33.41)- In the stretch, there was no one close enough and able to take on Quakerce. She had a clean trip, and that did go a long way in this victory, but that trip put her in the position to win. I wrote in the preview that I was concerned about her start, and I did not want to see her a little further back. Had she been a little further back, she would have been in the heart of traffic trouble. Crown Of Light ran well, but could not challenge Quakerce, and actually looked as though she began to tire late, and was nearly caught by stablemate Quiver Pond. Estero Farms happily saddles the second and third place runners here, which is the nest best thing to winning. Behind these three, there was some outside movement from closers making bids, and others hanging on. Dalitierri Girl prevails in all of this to get a fourth place check for Hawaiian Shirt Guy. Otherwise, Maggie Greene, Broomsticks Concerto, Blonde Art, Speeding Tales, Chai Mission, and Sweet Gail could have finished in any order, as it was that tight between them. The only four to be labeled as disappointments would be Unsuited Rainbow, Agenda, Skeleton Abra, and Apricot.

About The Winner: Quakerce, trained by Sir Daniel Martin, and ridden by T C Baze, is a two year old filly by Farce and out the late Rosa Quake. She was bred in Florida by Team 7 Illusions as a yearling, and was acquired unraced by Sir Daniel Martin in the December auction, for just $11.000. Congratulations to the connections! Quakerce now has four wins in six starts, two stake wins, and this is her first graded win.
