Rain Not a Problem for Notarized Kate in Frizette

The Frizette (Grade 1) (BC)- $400.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile on the Dirt
October 3, 2015

Slop? Notarized Kate is used to it by now. After all, off tracks have been common this year when it comes to graded stakes for two year old fillies in New York.   She didn’t win the muddy Schuylerville at the Spa, but finished second, but she would win the muddy Adirondack about a month later. Notarized Kate doesn’t need it to rain of course, but she certainly has gotten accustomed to it. On Saturday, the rain was coming down in droves and created a sloppy track for The Frizette.   That was enough to convince Blushing Meadows to scratch Patisserie from the race, who was a filly that we thought could do well here. Patisserie did run on soft turf once, and the result there does make it obvious why Blushing Meadows opted out.   There is no such issue with Notarized Kate, who came into the race on top of the BC Juvenile Fillies point leaderboard, and confirmed why that was the case today. No Frizette winner has ever won the BC Juvenile Fillies. After the convincing win by Notarized Kate today, you have to like her chances to break that.   Congrats go out to Pristine Stables, not always one of those trainers who gets a chance to see their name in the SRF but he has pretty good filly on his hands that figures to be talked about for quite some time! It is the first Grade 1 win for the trainer, and their second such graded victory.  (Guess who scored the other one?)   Jockey J R Leparoux is also a first time winner of the stake.   Here’s how it unfolded!

1st- 6- Notarized Kate (7/5)- Our eventual race winner from Pristine Stables was good out of the gate, but wisely decided not to bother herself with the pace being set on the lead by Effortless Admiral.   She wanted to stay on the rail, but as Farsha began her run to the back of the field, she needed to move over to the second lane as they entered the turn. Into the turn, she needed to position herself to the outside of Dirty Deeds and J Leparoux didn’t really seem to care that Jewel In The Sand was to her outside as she forced her over along with her. This probably only briefly hindered that one, as it benefitted Jewel In The Sand to have a lane to the outside as well.  At the top of the stretch she became level for the second position, and with two furlongs to go, she was shot of a cannon. Her stretch run was impressive, and if she brings this to KEE in four weeks, it’s going to be hard for anyone to match up. We saw Wicked Heat do similar in the Chandelier, so if these two lock horns in the stretch, it will be a thrill to watch.   Notarized Kate is the real deal, and she will do great things in her career. Perhaps the next example will be in four weeks.   The time of the win was 1:39.97, which was a bit faster then last years Frizette, which was also on a sloppy track.   Notarized Kate is a two year old filly by Gunga Din and out of Carry on Loving. She was bred in Texas by La Bahia Stables as a yearling and sold as an unraced two year old to Pristine Stables for $100.000 in April. Money well spent! Congratulations to all the connections!

2nd- 5- Downtheredcarpet (8/1)- The filly from Barcelona Farms was midpack initially, and then dropped a couple lengths further back as they hit the quarter mark.   Then, about three furlongs into the race and still on the backstretch, R Bejarano made an aggressive move to split Notarized Kate and Jewel in the Sand, and the by the time the turn began, she did the same to Farsha and Dirty Deeds to emerge second. Maintained a good stride through the turn and was closing in on the leader. At the same time, Notarized Kate began to close in on her. With a furlong and a half to go, that one got by, but she never backed down at that point. Because of this, she was also able to pass Effortless Admiral and show fight to the wire to hold off Lea and finish off the exacta.

3rd- 2- Lea (10/1)- The D J C Racing Stables filly got off to a good start out of the gate, showing initial interest to be just a few lengths off the lead, but jockey D Moran wasn’t entirely interested in that. He appeared to back Lea up a bit more, and by the time they hit the turn, she was seventh and about six lengths off the lead. Moran moved her forward in the stretch, but struggled at first to find an ideal lane. Looked at first to make a wide move, but then opted for the rail.   This should have been the decision from the start, and once she had the lane, she was in great stride.  The jockey indecisiveness kept her from second.

4th- 7- Jewel in the Sand (4/1)- Got off to a midpack start for trainer Mb Stables, and seemed content to stay in this position as a couple others that were running near her either looked to advance or pull back.    She would maintain a consistent stride into the turn, about 4-5 lengths from the lead. Found herself to the outside of Notarized Kate as they reached the exit of the turn, and they both looked to make a move at the same time. Unfortunately for Mb Stables, while Notarized Kate powered her way to the lead, Jewel In the Sand’s progress was much more deliberate. It was enough to get a 4th place check.

5th- 4- Stolen Secret (9/1)- Our pre-race pick from Alydar Stables was not in a hurry to get going in the early stages, being next to last into the turn. This is out of character for her so you have to wonder if the slop played a role. Exiting the turn, she showed that ability that led her to win four of her prior five career races briefly, but she was never able to make much headway and was possibly hindered by Dirty Deeds a bit.

6th- 10- Dirty Deeds (27/1)- Midpack early for trainer Aer Stables in the fourth position. She had a nice lane in the backstretch, and as they approached the turn, she was urged forward a little by jockey J Alvarado. Dirty Deeds would advance to second in time for the run around the turn. While it did look like a move to the lead would be in the cards at this point, it never materialized, and by the end of the turn, she had lost one position and was about to lose a couple more. Stayed in decent shape until the final furlong, then she couldn’t keep up.

7th- 9- Plucky Elmo (29/1)- Began the race towards the back of the back for trainer Hawaiian Shirt Guy and assumed this position for the backstretch run. In the turn, jockey G Olguin looked to find a lane and move her forward. With this, she began to pick up her pace, but by the same token, Stolen Secret was behind her at the same start of this run, and would then beat her by a couple lengths.

8th- 11- Effortless Admiral (13/1)- Started quickly out of the gate for Ekli Stable, and was in the lead after about a furlong,   She would open a couple lengths on the field and set the opening quarter in :23.60. Led by three as they moved into the turn, with a 48-second flat first half. At the top of the stretch, she still seemed to be effortlessly leading and destined for at least, a good finish. Once Notarized Kate got by to take the lead in the last furlong, Effortless Admiral appeared to slam on the brakes.

9th- 3- Danzing Farley (7/1)- Began the race at the back of the pack for Australia Wide. Continued to remain at the back as a couple others that had been near her looked to make moves.  Still over eight lengths back at the top of the stretch, and she would never make an impact and would only beat the struggling Farsha.

10th- 8- Farsha (66/1)- Initially the quickest out of the gate for Waldo, but would soon assume a stalking position. As soon as the turn began, however, Farsha began to drop out of it. By the time they reached the exit of the turn, she was six lengths back and on her way to a tough finish.
