Record Setting Win for Odd Trek in The Acorn

The Acorn (Grade 1)- $700.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile on the Dirt
June 6, 2020

Since the leadup to the KYO, I have been talking about Odd Trek as a filly who’s best days would come during the summer months. Turns out, she is getting a head start on that with a powerful performance on Saturday in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes. The only prep race for the KYO that she would participate in was the SUN Oaks, and by winning that she was able to find her way into the KYO. Once there, she finished in the middle of the field, and figured to be a decent contender here. She would be one of our picks, but not the top one. Now, this filly has delivered, not caring if she had to start near the outside, and picks up the biggest win of her career. Her trainer is D J C Racing Stables, and he wins the race for the second straight year. Last year, he won with Cannolo, who went on to win the Phipps in the very next race on this card (though for Mb Stables). E Jaramillo is the winning jockey, doing so for the first time. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:34.90, and folks, that is new stake record. Let’s look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.27)- The early leader would be Risen Day, who emerges from the middle of the starting gate for Greyfriars Stable, to prevail in an initial battle for that spot with two that broke well from outside posts. Those fillies would be John Henry’s Zero Twist and Smokey Stover’s Mercy. They would eventually settled in to be a length behind Risen Day, and would be joined there on the outside by Mad Mistress, from Jokerjoes. In close proximity to this crowd would be Miss Pinnacle Party, from South Beach Racing, as well as Bite The Bullet, from Mb Stables, and Tell It Like It Is, out of Nakamura Stables, who were each close to the rail. It would be half a length to Estero Farms’ Drink Me Pretty, who had Cp Great Moon Queen (Greyfriars Stable) and Precise Performance (Mb Stables) to her outside. Odd Trek, our eventual winner from D J C Racing Stables, was next in line, running in the middle of the field, four lengths back. Red Headed Ruler (TwinTowersRacing) was next on the rail, and the trailers would be Lil Baby Bomber (Aer Stables) and Charming Beauty (Nakamura Stables).

(½ Mile- :46.76)- There was a fair amount of movement over this portion of the race, but not with the leader as Risen Day continues to lead the field down the backstretch, and moving into the turn. She has company now as Mad Mistress pulls up to her outside, but a new player gets involved here as well, as Precise Performance uses the outside lane that she had been in to advance her position and make it three wide for the lead. Moving into fourth would be Bite The Bullet, who advanced while on the rail. Cp Great Moon Queen pushed forward a little bit, following the move of Precise Performance, and she would run to the outside of both Zero Twist and Mercy, each of whom dropped back a little bit. There is no change with Odd Trek, who is going to take the turn while running five wide, and about five lenghts back. Red Headed Ruler, Lil Bomber, and Charming Beauty all maintain their positions.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- As the field moves into the turn, Risen Day tries to fend off Precise Performance, and does so for a little while, but that one would prove to be too much. With Bite The Bullet also progressing well, Risen Day cannot stand the heat much longer, and begins to fade out of contention. Precise Performance and Bite The Bullet have Mb Stables looking pretty good here, but more challengers were beginning to appear. The first would be from Mercy, who was becoming resurgent, as well as Cp Great Moon Queen who received the baton from her stablemate to now begin moving forward. However, the impressive mover here was Odd Trek. Midway through the turn, E Jaramillo urged his filly forward, and got an explosion of response, so much so that she might have done so too quickly, causing Jaramillo to have to move her out even wider before they hit the top of the stretch. Odd Trek did not mind that at all, handling the turn flawlessly, and by the time they reached the frontstretch, she was within a length and a half of the front running Precise Performance with plenty of time to get her. Elsewhere, Tell It Like It Is was moving up, but in a more gradual manner while Mad Mistress started to back out.

(Finish- 1:34.90)- Odd Trek did not miss a beat in the stretch, passing the leaders in an effortless manner, and pulling away from them with ease. She would hit the wire as a length and a half winner, impressing many as she sets a new record here for the prestigious Acorn. Tell It Like It Is came on for second, and looked best in her final strides. It was very tight for third, and in the end a dead heat is declared between Mercy and Precise Performance, who narrowly got the headbob over Bite The Bullet. Cp Great Moon Queen and Zero Twist were close here as well. Rounding out the order, it’s Drink Me Pretty, Red Headed Ruler, Lil Baby Bomber, Miss Pinnacle Party, Mad Mistress, Risen Day, and Charming Beauty.

About The Winner- Odd Trek, trained by D J C Racing Stables, and ridden to victory by E Jaramillo, is a three year old filly by Connectivity, and is out of Let Er Rip Taterchip. She was bred by Team 7 Illusions in Ontario as a first quarter two year old, and acquired by the trainer in private sales, still unraced, in February 2019 for $40.770. The win is her fifth in 10 starts, her second stake win, and first graded win. Her career earnings are now $620.800.
