The Sunday feature at SAR is the $120.000 Coronation Cup for 3yo fillies going 5.5 furlongs on turf.  This will be the 10th edition of the Coronation Cup.  Trainer D J C Racing Stables, 2019 and 2020, is the only conditioner who has claimed more than a single running of this event.  Jockeys J.R. Velazquez and J. Rosario have each been aboard two of the previous nine winners.  This year’s renewal offers a quality field and looks to be a tough puzzle to crack so let’s meet the sophomore fillies and their connections competing for the 2021 Coronation Cup:

#1 Diggin It (Mb Stables/J Lezcano): Leading-trainer Mb Stables sends two in here and they will start from the inside stalls.  This gal brings a turf record of 5-3-1-0, including a victory in the $100.000 Mamzelle last out, into this Sunday feature.  Appears to be tractable enough to work out her own trip and should be live in here.

#2 Twisted Express (Mb Stables/J. Alvarado): The second of two in here for the trainer, this one hasn’t been as prolific winning races on the lawn (8-1-5-1), but she has earned more for the stable.  Currently fighting a case of “seconditis”, but that neck miss in the G3 Soaring Softly may be enough to get the best of this field if she can reproduce that effort.  Hard to leave out on form and caught an advantageous draw.

#3 Act Of Laughter (Rampage Stables/J. Rosario): Hasn’t missed the board in six lifetime starts on the green stuff and sanwiched a couple wins around a good second-place effort in the $100.000 Limestone going this same trip.  May end up having to come from further out than she’s used to, but the jock has won two editions of this and knows how to get one home.

#4 Ruby Jaws (Arindel/T. Gaffalione): Winner of the $75.000 Melody Of Colors at GP in March and the $150.000 Sydney at CD in April comes into this one looking to get back on track after consecutive off-the-board finishes.  Last race down the hill at SA in the G2 Monrovia wasn’t that bad and if she can improve off of that should play a major role in this.

#5 Wake Up Brew (Dawson Farms/M. Franco): Winner of the $150.000 Jersey Girl going six furlongs at MTH changes back to the lawn where she hasn’t won in two attempts.  One of those could be a throw-out as it was over a soft HAW course, but if that CD effort can be replicated in this one, she can definitely grab a piece; however, this is the toughest field she has faced on the grass.

#6 Charley Trance (Asgar/E. Cancel): As of close of business on Saturday this conditioner is co-leader with Arindel for the SAR meet trainer’s standings, so, suffice to say, this filly is not in here for the participation trophy.  Only poor effort this season came on the off-going at LS in her last so improvement can be expected here.  Prior to that try in the $75.000 Chicken Fried Stakes, this gal had not missed the exacta in five races.  The way this barn is going, leave her out at your own expense.

#7 Ultimately Flawed (Williams9/J.J. Castellano): Two weeks ago this gal was in for the $32.000 tag where she ran 2nd so, obviously, this is a dramatic step up; however, she has seen these types before and while she hasn’t bested stakes horses in five attempts, she was 3rd in the G3 Matron.  Still, this is quite an ask on normal rest and this filly is taking the leap without that benefit.

#8 Carrie Ann (Crocker Ggs/J.R. Velazquez): Winner of the G3 Forward Gal (7F on Dirt) at GP in January will be trying turf for the first time in this one.  Form has tailed-off a bit since with only a 3rd place finish to show for her efforts in three consecutive G2 contests.  Lack of turf form makes her a mystery (and mom’s only winner besides this gal was 0-3 on turf) so punters will have to decide whether to back or lay the only graded winner in the field.

#9 Marathon Of Hope (Mo Mentum Farm/R. Santana Jr): Took five unsuccessful swings at MSW foes before finding her the right group at GG.  Came right back to DH for the win in a WO ALW so she may have this winning thing figured out.  Unfortunately for her, this is a salty group for her to tackle in her first try at winners on the lawn.  Early foot seems to be her main weapon so this is not an optimal draw, but is not in here without a chance to hold on for a piece.

#10 Ponzi Scheme (TwinTowersRacing/I. Ortiz Jr): May 31 CD ALW score was her first win around one turn.  Was able to stay in touch with the leaders before pouncing to get the best of her five foes in there.  Different ballgame today as this is a group of confirmed sprinters who have been doing this for the entire careers and did not get help with this draw.  May have to change tactics today, but should be running when the money is on the line.

Final Analysis: The three trainers at the top of the SAR standings will fight for the top honors, but it says here that they hit the wire 4-1-6-5.  Good luck to everyone involved in the 2021 Coronation Cup at SAR!
