Night Rider StablesSavannah Ruler likes the dirt just fine.  In only his 2nd race over a dirt course (and his 2nd race after being claimed for just $14.000 in March), the 3yo gelded son of Fractal scored a determined neck victory over Heavy Refund in the $175.000 Real Good Deal Stakes at DMR on Friday.  With the win, Savannah Ruler now has earnings of $130.200 with a record of 5-2-0-1 and could find himself under consideration for more lucrative opportunities down the road.

When the gates sprung it was the inside-drawn duo of Quality Air and Little Brown Jug hitting the front and taking the field through a quarter in :23.12 and a half in :46.13.  Two lengths behind them was Heavy Refund who raced with Gypsy King to his outside and the eventual winner to his inside; it was a long way back to Lets Celebrate at the tail of the six-horse field.

Turning for home, Quality Air had put away Little Brown Jug, with the latter falling to fifth, and while the stalking trio looked ready to pounce, they still had to make up two lengths on the leader.  After three-quarters in 1:09.63, Heavy Refund and Savannah Ruler struck the front in tandem and the stage was set for a two hundred yard battle to the wire.

Savannah Ruler got the better of his foe and hit the wire a neck in front.  Heavy Refund saved the place and he was three-quarters of a length in front of an always wide Gypsy KingQuality Air battled on to be fourth, beaten only two lengths.  The winner was timed in 1:21.69 as he just missed equalling the stakes record.

Congratulations to Night Rider Stables and Savannah Ruler on their victory in the $175.000 Real Good Deal Stakes at DMR!
