Six Fillies and Mares Go to Post in La Troienne

La Troienne – Grade 1 – $750.000

CD – 1 1/16 Mile – Dirt

For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upward

May 5, 2023

There are a lot of questions in this field. Can Laffy Crack and Z Command still run with these youngsters, or will Retrospect mark another one in the winner’s column?  Does Curlina have what it takes to go the distance? Will Starting Over live up to her name and get back to the form that earned her a triple digit SRF earlier this year? These and possibly other questions will be answered Friday when the gates open at CD.

Here’s the field:

1 Laffy Crack (Night Rider Stables)

This seven-year-old mare still has some run in her, but she’s been having a hard time making it to the winner’s circle lately. Could get a piece of the purse, but she’ll have a tough job beating these.

2 Curlina (Arindel)

Another one still trying for her first win this year. Finished second sprinting in allowance company last out. But at the distance and class, you’d have to go back to September for her last win, that coming in the Grade 3 RP Oaks. Wouldn’t count her out, but she’s got her work cut out for her.

3 Retrospect (Mb Stables)

This five-year-old mare has put together an impressive string of performances this year, with wins in the $100.000 NY-bred Broadway and the Grade 1 Beholder Mile. Beaten by a short neck last out in the Doubledogdate Stakes. A real threat to take home the winner’s share.

4 Bella Chica (Mb Stables)

Mb’s other entrant isn’t quite as impressive as Retrospect. Another one struggling to win her first of 2023. All of her starts this year have come at less than a mile. Maybe she’ll like the distance here more to her liking.

5 Starting Over (TwinTowersRacing)

Won the Correction two starts back at six furlongs and that on a sloppy track. Scored a 100 SRF finishing second in the Santa Monica (Grade 2). If she can get the distance, she could be a real contender in this field.

6 Z Command (Smokey Stover)

Coming in off a win in allowance company, this lady hasn’t been to the winner’s circle in graded company since the Spinster back in October. Loves going long, but it’s a question of how much this seven-year-old still has in the tank. If she’s in top form, she should be in the mix.
