Small Field for Sullivan Stakes

4/26/2020

7 GG   Sullivan Stakes

  $100.000    3yo Foaled in CA    1m    Turf    122lbs

We have a small field of four Cal-bred sophomores set to go a flat mile on the GG sod, and we look at the field for the 2020 Sullivan Stakes.  I’d just as soon throw a dart as try to handicap this one.  Sixteen stats between the entire field and only two of them have a stakes start.

I made Drumbeats the luke warm favorite off of that win at FG where he got home in fairly fast fashion.  The fact that he’s changed hands twice in six starts is a red flag to me, so… well you get the idea.

Grinderswitch looked good breaking maiden at SA, and tries grass for the first time.  Neither his sire or damn were weed-eaters, so I don’t know how he will take to it.

I think I’ll grab a cold snack and just take this one in.

Here’s the Field –

1
Drumbeats  Winning Link Stables  Gonzalez Ru 122 5/2

Two wins from his six starts including a nice Alw win at FG for the new owner.  He changed hands at the Mar Auction for $26.010 and paid immediate dividends.  This is a logical spot for him and he certainly looks like a horse that can make a splash today.  He was fifth beaten a length in the Tyro as a 2yo, so he certainly looks the part.

2
 Quarter Plan  Gdp Inc  Desormeaux K J 122 4/1

Nice maiden win at GP in his second race then ran up the track in the TAM Derby (GII) gong against a very nice field of horseflesh.  Obviously, this is softer than that last race, and they move him over to the grass for the first time.  Shows a nice am work on the green stuff so he could be a serious factor here.

3
 Grinderswitch  YME Stable  Hernandez J J 122 7/2

Broke maiden at SA last out and did it in nice fashion facing Cal-breds in that race as well.  Changes to the turf where he does show a nice work over the SoCal surface.  This is only his third start so it’s a bit difficult to know what we have here but he certainly is a horse that should get some support.

4
Mojo Phooey  Ekli Stable  Orozco I 122 4/1

Nice win at TUP in his first race on the turf, so he certainly seemed to take a likig to the green stuff.  Steady trio of works over the surface so it looks like they were aiming for this race.  If he runs back to that last out race, he should be in the thick of it.
