Small Field Set to Sprint in The Vagrancy Handicap

5/8/21

4   BEL       The Vagrancy Handicap (GIII)

It’s a small and wide-open field set to sprint at BEL in The Vagrancy Hcp (GIII) on Saturday.  Only five entrants for this one, and it’s a real mixed bag as some of these have won big races but aren’t exactly in their best form right now.  I took Deliberate Miss as the top choice… the Mb Stables conditioned mare won a graded stakes to close out her 4yo season, and I think this is a place for her to get a win.  Let’s go to the outside and put Envy in the second spot.  She’s done the bulk of her damage going two turns on the sod, but she is tough on the main track and has sprinted a few times.  Let’s see if this wakes her up.

Here’s The Field –

1
   Deliberate Miss    Mb Stables    Velazquez J R   118   7/2

She’s been on the board in sixteen of twenty-five starts so she is all about being a race horse.  Won the Bayakoa (GIII) at LA then was fourth in the same only the OP rendition, name for the great mare.  Second last out at GG vs. Alw company, so she looks ready for a big effort.

2
   Sweet Catomine    John Henry    Bridgmohan S X   118   4/1

Nine wins from twenty-three starts, so she’s no stranger to the winner’s circle.  She already has two wins this year, taking the Orleans at DED and an Alw race ou in NM.  Sixth last out vs graded horses, so she’s gotta step it up a bit here.

3
Malagan Girl    Spankys Barn    Franco M   118   12/1

Had a big ’20 season winning three and showing five runner-up efforts, but ’21 has been two eighth place finishes, and she stopped abruptly last out at SA facing Alw horses.  Solid work getting ready for today, so can she turn it around?

4
Secrether    Ekli Stable    Ortiz I Jr   121   9/1

Four wins in a row, but she’s been beating lesser than what she sees today.  She did win the Minaret at TAM, then two romps at FON with bottom end stakes company.  This is a tougher spot, but she may be ready to take the step up to black-type horses.

5
Envy    Mo Mentum Farm    Jaramillo E   118   7/2

Five big wins last season, but it’s been tougher in ’21… fourth in the Beholder (GI) at A but was last of seven last out on the SA sod in the Santa Ana Stakes (GIII).  Switches back to the main track as they try to figure out the best spot for her.  I’d give her a look here.
