Snake Island Makes Statement with Win in Fifth Avenue

NY Stallion Series- Fifth Avenue
AQU- For Fillies Two Years Foaled In NY
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
December 17, 2022

2022 was the third time that the Fifth Avenue, part of the NY Stallion Series, would run for a $500.000 purse, and that led to a strong field that had a nice mix of horses that have already proven themselves at this level, and those looking to make a statement in what is probably their final race as a two-year-old. Snake Island came into the race as a filly who had been running consistently ever since she first stepped on the racetrack, and just a month ago she raced right here at the Big A in the $100.000 Key Cents and took home the win. This made her seem like one of the better options in the field, and while she was not our top pick, she was among our picks. With J Lezcano back in the saddle, Snake Island has now won back-to-back State bred stakes, and will be one to watch next year. She is trained by Night Mare Racing, and it is her first win in this race. For J Lezcano, is also a first-time winner. The time of victory was 1:21.96, the second quickest of the runnings of the race at seven furlongs. Let’s take a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.19)- The field makes their way down the backstretch with Smokey Stover’s Sinissippi Queen the quickest of them all out of the gate. Right behind her, we have a group of three, including Asgar’s Jersey Childe, who for a moment looked like she might battle with Sinissippi Queen at the front. Instead, she stalks the pace while being in the third lane, while having the leader’s stablemate, Breathe In Brooklyn directly to her inside, and yet another Smokey horse, The Hateful Eight, on the rail. Up next, we have a four wide group, and our eventual winner from Night Mare Racing, Snake Island, is part of it while running in the third lane. To her outside, is One Liner, trained by Mb Stables. Another Mb horse, Indien Rouge, is on the rail here, with Hot Angie beside her for Night Rider Stables. Behind them, we have Upon A Time (Mo Mentum Farm) and Dolly P (Arindel), and the trailers are Black Moon Concerto (TwinTowersRacing) and Ignore Tucker (Fractious).

(1/2 Mile- :46.28)- Sinissippi Queen is still the race leader at the end of the backstretch and moving into the turn. There has not been much change in the running order behind her. The Hateful Eight was inching closer a little bit on the rail to the leader, and we did not see any push forward yet from Snake Island as she still runs in that group of four in the middle of the field, about four lengths from the front. The post time favorite, Dolly P, begins to consider a five wide move.

(Top of Stretch, 1.6F To Go)- Sinissippi Queen has run a good race up to this point, and she enters the stretch looking like she could hang on all the way to the wire. Her lead is a length, as both The Hateful Eight and Jersey Childe run side by side but neither have mounted a bid on the leader yet. There is enough room between them for multiple horses to come between them, and both Snake Island and Breathe In Brooklyn are well positioned to capitalize on that. One Liner is still running evenly with those two but runs in the fourth lane. Indien Rouge and Hot Angie are a length behind them, then Black Moon Concerto. Dolly P did move to a five wide position on the track but made absolutely no progress on any of her rivals. Further back, Upon A Time and Ignore Tucker had their work cut out for them now if today was going to be their day.

(Finish- 1:21.96)- For a little while in the stretch, it looked like, maybe, Sinissippi Queen could hang on but in the final furlong, that was clearly not going to be the case as she got leg weary. Coming quickly was Snake Island, who left those that she was running with behind in a flash and was now just a length from the front, running evenly with Jersey Childe. Given that she had cut the deficit on that one as well, it was looking like we would have a repeat of the Key Cents. Getting closer to the wire, it would indeed be Snake Island, having plenty left for the seventh furlong and probably more if she needed too. She’d go on to win convincingly by a length with Jersey Childe taking second and Hot Angie running well late to be third. Sinissippi Queen settles for fourth over stablemate The Hateful Eight. One Liner, Indien Rouge, Breathe In Brooklyn, Ignore Tucker, Upon A Time, Black Moon Concerto and Dolly P are how the rest of them finish.

About The Winner- Snake Island, trained by Night Mare Racing and ridden to victory by J Lezcano, is a two-year-old filly by Slither and is out of Grand Terror. She was bred in New York as a first quarter two-year-old by her trainer, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in five starts, and second stake win. Her career earnings are now $377.320.
