Spanish Showboat Looks Tough in The United Nations

                        The United Nations – GI
                     MTH Race 11 1 3/8M – Turf
                              Purse $300.000
                       Three Year Olds and Up

A big race in New Jersey for marathon turf runners who’s goal is most likely the Breeders Cup Turf at the end of the year. A rather small field actually with on seven entries to try to grab grade one glory. Let’s take a look at the field for this marathon turf grade one race here in New Jersey.

1. General White (26-7-5-5 $535.750), trained by Eastern Equine

Here’s a horse who has been out of form lately. He hasn’t been on the board in any of his last four races. His last start was the first one of a lengthy layoff so there is room for improvement but I think he will need to have improved a whole bunch to beat this group. Looks overmatched but maybe he runs a shocker.

2. Jamie Mach (16-7-1-2 $291.090), trained by Gdp Inc

A recent allowance winner last start going a mile and an eighth was a pretty nice win but this is a lot stiffer competition than that race. Most of the time he tries to come from way back so he will need a very fast pace if he does what he usually does. Looks overmatched here and I don’t think he will win.

3. Speeding Zeus (15-5-1-1 $307.710), trained by D J C Racing Stables

A recent seventy seven dollar auction purchase after a win in a graded stake going a mile and a half on the soft turf at CD. I think he likes this far of a distance and the wizard D J C Racing Stables will have him ready to go for sure. He may have a chance especially if the ground has water in it.

4. Spanish Showboat (50-16-6-8 $3,946.470), trained by Mb Stables

The old classy eight year old gelding that’s been to the winners circle sixteen times in his long career. He is coming off two grades stakes wins in a row so he is still running as good as ever. He is the classiest horse in this race and he will definitely be my top pick for the race because he is the classy old guy.

5. Midwestern Slang (19-5-6-3 $1,802.620), trained by Gdp Inc

Last years Breeders Cup Turf runner up was just bought for one dollar and is now winding up in a grade one for his first start for new trainer Gdp Inc. He didn’t run terrible last time in the Belmont Gold Cup where he ran fifth but only got beat a length. If he runs the Breeders Cup race he can win.

6. Bandito (12-2-1-2 $140.240), trained by TwinTowers Racing

The lone three year old in the group here is getting six pounds from the rest of the field so that will be a very good advantage for him. I don’t know if he’s a good enough horse to compete with these but he has been working up a storm. If he runs to those works he may have an upset chance.

7. Lets Do It Big Boy (12-3-6-0 $161.970), trained by Team 7 Illusions

This Cherokee Sunset gelding just ran the biggest race of his life last start when he ran second in a grade two at SA going a mile and a quarter. I think he is on the improve and getting better but I still think he may be a little ways off from being able to win one of these big grand one races.

Summary

A good group has lined up here with some good horses trying to get a grade one victory. Spanish Showboat is the absolute class horse in the field and is my pick to win because of how good he is. I think the biggest upset chance is Midwestern Sling for Gdp Inc if he is the same horse he was last year.
