A six-pack of sprinting spinsters will be headed to the gate on Saturday, and we look at the field for the Vinery Madison (GI), a seven-furlong sprint on the main track here at KEE.  Wow, what a star-studded lineup for this one!  You can take any of these and stand there with a chance, but I’ll go with Matamata as the top choice today.  She comes into this with three wins in a row, four of five, and just seems to be in a spot to get another win.  Speaking of knowing how to get her picture taken, Baptised By Fire has seventeen lifetime wins, has won five of her last six… you get the picture… she knows how.  Get to the windows early, there should be a big crowd here in Lexington for a great day of stakes action!

Here’s The Field –

1
Baptisted By Fire    Mo Mentum Farm    Dettori L   123   3/1

Four wins last season closed it out with a win and kicked off ’23 with a victory in the Santa Monica (GII).  As a matter of fact, take out the BC splatter where she just found her footing and she shows six wins.  Now, that BC race was here so… you know how I feel about horses and courses.

   Christina G    Mb Stables    Saez L   123   9/2

Classy mare that knows how but is still looking for her first win of the season.  She was fourth at LRL in the Fritchie (GIII) and fourth in the Hurricane Bertie (GIII), and she’s showing a tendency to tire late.  Can she turn it around today?

3
   Starting Over    TwinTowersRacing    Jaramillo E   123   7/1

If you believe in my horse-for-course theory, you’d probably jump over this one.  Twelfth in the Spinster (GI) and the BC FM Sprint (GI), both over this gorgeous strip.  Now, she won last out in the Correction, and was runner up in the Santa Monica (GII) prior to that, so…

4
   Matamata    Smokey Stover    Velazquez J R   123   9/5

Four wins in her last five starts, including three of those vs. graded horses.  She’s very class, can flat out haul the mail, and is dangerous every time the put her in the gate.  Don’t leave her off of your tickets.

5
Last Lady    Lindeman Prairie    Lopez P   123   9/2

Closed out ’22 with a win in the Dream Supreme, then won the Inside Information (GII) at GP, both in wire-to-wire fashion.  Tired to be fifth in the Fritchie (GIII) in her most recent, but she could bounce back from that.

6
Theres No Doubt    Angelos Stable    Rodriguez A R   123   5/2

Another classy lady that just keeps putting money in the bank.  A win in the Fritchie (GIII) beating a few of these, and two runner-up efforts this season, both graded races, so I’d give her a chance vs. any type.
