Superbush the Top Pick in Commonwealth

Commonwealth – GIII
$350.000 – For Four Year Olds And Upward
7 Furlongs – Dirt
Keeneland – April 4, 2026

It is a Grade 3 and there is a $350.000 purse being offered yet the twenty-third running of the Commonwealth at Keeneland on Saturday has only attracted a field of five. The short field provides a great opportunity for the five owners and the horses that will face the starter. There is a 55% chance of rain as of this writing.

1. Louisiana Asset (Big Jd Racing/F.H. Da Silva) Was showing good form at the end of last year when the gelding won the Boyd for LA Breds to close out 2025. He also won the G3 Vigil Stakes last year. The news has not been as good thus far in 2026 having started twice without yet hitting the board. He did close well for fourth in the G3 Challenger last time out in a crowded field but gets much less ground to work with here. A wet track could help his chances with four wins and eight total placings in nine off track starts.

2. Oh Brother (Threshold/J.R. Velasquez) The seven-year-old gelding won over $2.000.000 last season mostly by winning the lucrative G3 $2.500.000 Mint Million at Kentucky Downs. He followed that win up by nearly taking the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile and posting his fifth straight triple digit SRF speed figure. He ended his season with an eleventh-place finish in the G1 BC Mile. Purchased privately this year for $80.000 he has made one start for his new barn and was not a threat when finishing sixth in the G3 GP Mile. He curiously stays on the dirt versus the grass where he has found his success.

3. Deviations (TwinTowersRacing/S.X. Bridgmohan) He is a stakes winner and has shown decent form in his two starts this season. He was a fast closing sixth in the G3 The Fool Handicap finishing a length behind Superbush that day who will be in gate five today. He carried a pound less than Superbush when beaten and will have to carry equal weight today. On the plus side he was closing fast in The Fool and gets an additional furlong in this race.

4. Dorian Gray (Mb Stables/L. Dettori) Finished his six-year-old year by winning the G1 BC Sprint and the G3 Elite Power. He opened up his 2026 campaign just two weeks ago when he finished a fading sixth in the G3 Whitmore Stakes. Was that just a sharpener for this or is he just a step slower as a seven-year-old? This race has come up well for him if he is anywhere near the horse, he has been in the past. Throw out the last race. We’ll get a better read on his form after this race.

5. Superbush (Acber Farms/F. Geroux) He is the only horse in the field that has finished on the board in his last race. In that last start he won the G3 The Fool Handicap which was his second straight stakes win and the first race of his career where he posted a triple digit SRF speed figure. He has won seven of thirteen starts for this barn since being bought at auction for a mere $4.930 at the end of 2024 and seems like a five-year-old who is still improving.

With a five-horse field even I might have a chance of picking a winner in this one. Superbush seems like the obvious pick. Put Deviations in second with Dorian Gray in third to complete the trifecta.
