Sweet Gail Surprises in Mrs Revere

Mrs Revere (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
CD- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
November 23, 2018

Someone make sure Sweet Gail is never allowed anywhere near lasix again. The filly had been successful before being acquired by Sccj Stables from Smokey Stover in the latter’s downsizing, but when arriving with her new trainer, Sweet Gail’s adds were changed up. A stint with lasix led to disappointing finishes well out of the money, but that was removed for the Mrs Revere. In the preview, I felt this would lead to her showing improvement in this race, but did not pick her in the end. Not many other people did, either, as she went off at odds of 33/1. Sweet Gail was the best today, making Sccj Stables a two-time winner of the Mrs Revere. You have to go back over a decade to find the prior win, coming in 2006 with Storm Queen. Jockey J Rosario is a first time winner of the stake. Congratulations to them! Let’s take a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.71)- Three of them look particularly ambitious in the early stages of the race. Harsh, known for jumping out to the lead, would do so again for her trainer, Mb Stables, but she would have a couple keeping pace with her right away. Moon Car was right to her outside for Crocker Ggs, and from the far outside, we would see Infrastructure join them for Our Athletes. Daltierri Girl, another Our Athletes filly, was with them initially but began to drop off going into the first turn. At that point, Harsh pulled clear by a length. It would be a gap of two lengths to the middle of the field, and that’s where we saw our eventual winner, Sweet Gail, running at this point for Sccj Stables, three and a half off the pace. Chateau de Chambord (John Henry) was even with her on the rail, while Blonde Art (First Class Stable) looked to come on through between them. Swept Sidways (Estero Farms) was a length behind them, and the trailers would be Snacks (D J C Racing Stables) and Blue Jeans (First Class Stable).

(½ Mile- :47.08)- Rounding the first turn, and moving into the backstretch, we see Harsh continuing to look sharp on the front end, and she picks up the pace a bit. Her lead is a length and a half over second place Moon Car who seemed to want to chase Harsh a little bit. Moon Car drove ahead of the other two she had been with, as now Infrastructure and Daliterri Girl were even for third, and two and a half lengths back. Sweet Gail was not interesting in getting closer to them at this time, and would instead run in the outside lane of three wide with Chateau de Chamboard and Blonde Art, like had been the case most of the way to this point. Swept Sidways, Snacks, and Blue Jeans are still at the back and have around seven lengths to make up.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Down the backstretch, and around the turn, Harsh is still leading the way and seems to be running well. She emerges at the top of the stretch with her lead a little less then a full length over Moon Car. Infrastructure remained steady at this point, not advancing from where she was previously, but dropping, as was the case with Daltierri Girl. As this was going on, we see Sweet Gail use her three wide lane to move forward, pull even with Infrastructure, and now be about two and a half lengths back, and gaining. Chateau de Chambord was progressing too, but less convincingly. Further back, Snacks was closing hard from running way back at the rear of the field. She was now in the middle of the back, and had a great lane for herself to follow Sweet Gail, then potentially move to her outside if she wanted. Blue Jeans passed a couple. Swept Sidways was looking a bit flat here, and Blonde Art had called it a day.

(Finish- 1:39.72)- With a furlong to go, J Rosario asked Sweet Gail for just a little more, and she responded with authority, finding a gear that no one else had. It was lights out for the field at this point, as she comfortably took command of the race and wins while driving. Moon Car started to pass Harsh at the same point, but was no where near as good as Sweet Gail. The stretch push of Snacks was impressive, and ends up with her getting a nose in front of Moon Car for second. Chateau de Chamboard’s steady run throughout got her fourth in this three way photo for place. A length back, Infrastructure holds off Blue Jeans and Harsh, who struggled quite a bit in the final furlong, ends up seventh. A couple more lengths back we find Swept Sidways and Dalitierri Girl. Eventually, Blonde Art also got to the finish line.

About The Winner- Sweet Gail, trained by Sccj Stables and ridden to victory by J Rosario, is a three year old filly by Sweet Maccu, and is out of Hill Gail. She was bred in California by Jj Racing as a yearling, and acquired by Sccj Stables, via Smokey Stover in private sales for $10.000 in June of this year. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her sixth in 15 starts, fourth stake win, and third graded win. Her career earnings are now $443.600.
