5 SA Lewis Stakes (GIII) [KYD]
$100.000 3yo 1 1/16m Dirt 121lbs +penalties
We head out to SoCal and take in a nice group that will be headed to the post on Saturday afternoon with TC aspirations in their minds, and we look at the field for the Lewis Stakes (GIII) to be run at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track here at SA. I’m going to the rail for my top choice and landed on No Charge. The Mb Stables trained gelding looked good taking the Sugar Bowl at FG and I think he can fire right back today for another big win. I’ll head out a bit into the gate and put Cheesy in the second spot. He was only beaten a length on BC Day and a half length last out, while running a hard luck sixth and fourth. Another one of those and I think he brings home a sizeable check. Let’s give Pollards Vision a hard look as well. He won three in a row before his tiring tenth on BC Day… if you like the turf-to-dirt thing, he may be your choice.
Here’s The Field –
Got his second lifetime win with a gutsy nose-victory in the Sugar Bowl at FG last out, after a couple of near misses vs. stakes company. A nose loss in the Smoke Glaken, then beaten two while third at DMR in a Cal-bred stakes. He looks the part, comes as part of a three-headed Mb monster and you have to give him a serious look.
Broke maiden at FL in his second race then ran big to be second in the King Glorious at LA while facing stakes company for the first time. That was vs. Cal-breds but he certainly did nothing to shame himself in that one, battling through the lane to miss by a half length. He has room to improve and could be a good one.
Broke maiden and was tagged out of that race, came right back to take the Tyro at MTH then was second over this turf course vs. stakes company… but the last two have been less than favorable. Eighth on BC Day and sixth in the Remsen (GII) so it’s time to get back into it.
Two wins from his last four starts but the other two races were up-the-track finishes in the Iroquois (GIII) and the KY Jockey Club (GII) where he was the beaten favorite in both races. He sure does have talent but he’s also very hit-or-miss.
Got his second win last out taking down Alw horses at TAM, getting home clear by two. His only black type effort was an eighth in the Bourbon (GII) at KEE on the turf. But he’s had two solid main track starts since that trio of turf efforts and the vet paid a visit. Mb always comes for the money.
Had his three race win streak snapped when he tired to be tenth in the BC Juv Turf (GI) after setting the pace through most of that one. He broke maiden on the main track at ELP, and that was a muddy strip, so he should be able to handle the move back here.
Broke maiden at GG last out getting home by a head in that flat mile race. This is obviously a big step up from that, but he showed good speed and a determination in that victory so let’s see if he can move up the ladder in only his fifth start.
Broke maiden at KEE back in Oct then was a near-miss second at AQU in the Nashua (GIII) but the last pair have been less than thrilling. Sixth vs NY-bred at AQU and then closed a bit to be fifth at GP last out facing open stakes company as the luke-warm 5/1 favorite. Can he get back on track today?
Won three out of four in a stretch there, including a nice win in the Breeders Futurity (GI) at KEE and the AP Wash Futurity. But his last pair have been less than what the barn wanted. Eleventh on BC Day, then a tiring eighth in the Remsen (GII), it’s time to turn things back around.
Two wins from seven starts including a stakes at WO on the grass. He was a closing sixth on BC Day and was only beaten a half length when fourth in the Sham Stakes (GIII) over this track. I think he will build off of those races and be a major factor in this one.
This filly broke maiden last out and they go right after it, chasing a big stakes and the boys. You know my feelings on girls vs. boys and I think she’s up for a long day at the track, especially after catching an outside post.
The third part of the Mb three-headed monster and he catches the outside gate, yet again, after breaking from the ten post in his last pair of starts. Fourth beaten a head in the Nashua (GIII) and just didn’t get going when ninth in the Remsen (GII) so he’s going to need his best to be part of this one.
Two wins from five starts and was fourth in the RP Springboard Mile where he did have the lead in that one. If he draws in, he could spell trouble.
Broke maiden on the TUP turf the was last of eleven at RP. I think they’d rather draw in with the other charge.
Broke maiden last out and would need a miracle to draw into the field today.
