For Fillies Three Years Old
March 25, 2023
Most of these fillies don’t have KYO points going into this contest. But one of them will come away with 50 for the win and a chance to get into the gate come KYO day. This race is not always a springboard to the KY Oaks, but it does open up the possibility.
Here’s the field:
1 Temperature (Aer Stables)
This filly has been on the radar since she broke her maiden at first asking at PRX by five lengths. Since then, she’s been brilliant at times, but she’s had some ups and downs. Finished third in the DMR Debutante (Grade 1) before winning the Mazarine BC Stakes (Grade 3), but so far, she has no KYO points. A win here would give her fifty points and put her right in the heat of things. This one is hoping for a dry track.
2 Empty Spaces (South Shore Stables)
Another one coming in with no points toward the KYO. Has a maiden and allowance win to her credit. Has spent most of her short career sprinting and did not fare well when she tried to stretch out last out in the Silverbulletday on a muddy track. Will need to step up a bit to win here.
3 Electric Mischief (Arindel)
Won the WV TC Nutrition Breeders Classic in state-bred company as a two-year-old. Won in optional claiming company last out at the same distance as this race, so she has that on her side. Wouldn’t count her out, but she will need a big effort to get money in this field.
4 Crystal Star (Smokey Stover)
Still a maiden, but she’s been close a several times. In fact, she has hit the board in three of her four starts. Just seems to need some experience before competing at this level.
5 Cold Storage (Rock Creek)
This filly has 9 KYO points and hopes to add to that total with a win here. She won the Grade 3 Adirondack at two but hasn’t had much luck in graded company since then. Still, that win earns her some respect in here and she just might come away with a win.
6 Sioux Flower (Mb Stables)
Silverbulletday winner has 22 KYO points to her credit. Finished sixth in her last start in the Alexandra (Grade 2), but this should be a better spot for her. A win would not be a surprise.
7 Telling All (Nakamura Stables)
Finished third by a head in her last start, the CAC Oaks on turf. Before that, she finished third in the $125.000 Glorious Song. Her only trip to the winner’s circle in stakes company came in the Sorority Stakes as a two-year-old. She has been knocking on the door but hasn’t quite been able to pull it all together.
8 Sparks (Pan Farms)
Third in the Santa Ysabel (Grade 3) last out in the mud at SA. She holds 15 KYO points and could add to that total here. Never worse than third in five starts. Needs a little racing luck and a good trip.
9 Lysistrata (Riggins Racing)
This filly has earned more being bought and sold than on the racetrack. She’s changed hands twice for a total of $340.000. She did look pretty special breaking her maiden in the mud at HOU by five lengths in state-bred company. Finished third in the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes and earned 6 KYO points for her effort. A top effort could get her a piece of the purse.
11 Tarte Aux Pommes (Jerry Garcia Racing)
The scratch of Atomic Woman puts Tarte Aux Pommes in the #10 gate. Just three starts and a maiden win for this filly. Tried graded level last out and finished ninth of twelve in the Davis against the boys. Should like this spot better. It’s obvious the connections have a lot of confidence in this girl and it’s hard not to get caught up in that enthusiasm.
