Tension is High in The Debutante Stakes

The Debutante Stakes
6f on Dirt
Purse $225.00 For Fillies Two Years Old
Churchill Downs Racetrack Louisville, Kentucky

These early two year old stakes races become nauseating in trying to separate runners with only one or two starts, as most start looking the same. The task is even worse with the female division because any experienced handicapper or horseman knows that fillies and mares live to take turns beating each other for the most part, good grief Charlie Brown! Ok, enough complaining, let me do my job. Two things stand out like a sore thumb when looking down at the form for this one, firstly, Sassette from Serenity Stables was purchased for $925 from a barn with lifetime earnings of under $550 since 2019. Certainly the happiest player walking this past April 21st had to be the barn’s owners. The nervous tension felt by the current connections as the gates open Sunday should be something else. Sassette won at first asking in Arcadia, then was purchased and then sent to the KY Juvenile to face males. She got the lead and then faded to run mid-pack. Now given plenty of time to get right, she shows up in a much better spot and should throw down hard in here. High tension for her owners and backers Sunday. Secondly, Doubtville Gal from TwinTowers Racing received a death blow draw in being assigned the far outside post, but she also will appreciate the possible fast pace of this race. “Gal” has closed twice and has already shown grit in her runs. If she can improve her numbers she can run a shocker here at an expected big price. Seven Seven Seven from Greyhound was purchased for $111 and then won at first asking in a small field of state breds in NY. Shows up taking a shot here and the rider comes with her. Food for thought. Eye Appeal from Mb Stables shows up here after two close to identical runs, albeit on two drastically different surfaces. That fact is nothing to be overlooked and with the perennial leading barn calling the shots there is no telling what her top gear is yet.

Of The Rest;

Class Play from Delta Farms has shown gas in both starts and is big, already standing 16 hands, so she won’t be pushed around in here. As can be said for most, there is no telling yet how good she really is.

Excellent Meeting from Royalty Stables got bet at first asking and delivered in workman like fashion in a race that surely helped her out. Expect improvement here off a solid debut.

Sunset Sur La Mer from Nakamura Stables is still small at 15.2 and has not been the best away from the latch initially, but her second gear has been impressive. The barn has plenty of experience, so don’t just toss out. Surprise package in this context.

December Storm from Barcelona Farms will probably take back off the projected fast pace and be running on late. Guessing game as to her impact here.

Shards Of Bo from Bigchief Stables won at first asking down the road at Keenland and now takes a shot in a stakes. Not out of the question, but the draw doesn’t help.

Bay and Knight from Our Athletes is cleverly named and showed grit in getting her head down at first asking. Because of only facing three rivals that day, she has to be down the list for this dance.

Susan Lots Of Ice from Hammelot Farm got bet down and won at first asking in Arcadia. Second year barn has hit the board in five of twelve stakes appearances this year while winning twice. More food for thought at a projected price.

The strangely named Mr Ed from Angelos Stable won at first asking going wire-to-wire while under a tight hold in Philadelphia. The rail draw dictates the tactics, especially in a full field. She will gun and will need to improve to prevail here.

AE List;

Three Angles Massage from Williams9 is still a maiden. Pass.

Fashionably Late from Nakamura Stables broke last, rushed up and won at Charles Town. Would need marked improvement to say the least from the outside slot.

Zuzus Petals from Big Jd Racing won at first asking in a four horse race at Tampa Bay Downs during a thunderstorm. Pass.

Queen Rain from T Boy Racing dead heated for second in her first run and then won by two lengths in her second run. Both races at the Mountain, so I would have to have more than a few doubts. Pass.
