The Canadian Turf Has More Questions Than Answers

The Canadian Turf – Grade III
GP   Race #8   1m   InTurf   Graded Stake
Purse $150.000  For Four Year Olds And Upward.

1 First Motion, trained by Nakamura Stables
A winner of just one from six there isnt much to recommend him on form but in true HRP style this beaten claimer threw a 1.34 and 4 turf work over the mile and has to be considered. I really cant say anything about his form apart from its pretty meaningless after that work so this really is a matter of wait and see for his trainer and the rest of us.

2 Team Panther, trained by Tiratzo
This five year old has only won two from eighteen but did run some nice races on dirt including a neck second in the garde three Seagram Cup Stakes. As with First Motion though his recent turf work of 1.21 and 3 seems too good to ignore and though for 18 races everyone believed this was a dirt horse we will just have to wait and see whether that work will have anything to do with the finish of this race.

3 Danke Schon, trained by nakamura Stables
A real consistent maiden he finally won at his seventh attempt in a little TAM maiden but then, and i hate to say it again, in true HRP style he went and ran a very close second in the Fort Lauderdale on his seasonal debut. Like the two inside him i have no idea who good he is but that last run was very good so i guess we will find out today whether his second win will come in this graded stakes.

4 Sleet, trained by Fractious
Unlike a few of the others he has always looked like a turfer and managed a decent win in the Hill Prince and a close second in the Twilight Derby last season. After a seventh in the HOL Derby he was sold for a very cheap looking twenty dollars but when he reappeared in the CA Cup Turf Classic he did indeed look worth twenty dollars with a well beaten last. He has managed a 1.34 and 4 turf mile work which seems to be the new standard time for this level which put him in the race here.

5 Laughoftenlovemuch, trained by TwinTowersRacing
Hasnt done much with only two wins from fifteen attempts but like most of the field here made his form look pretty stupid with a 1.34 and 3 work recently. I have no idea where to place him on form but his works give him a great chance.

6 Creepy Spirit, trained by D J C Racing Stables
Took his seasonal debut win in good style but it was just a one win allowance at Hou so it has to be treated with a little wariness. Not a bad sort and works like a stakes winner but that could be said for most of the field so i have no idea where to put him here.

7 Steel Ball Red Echo, trained by Chili Kings Stables
Didnt look so good on seasonal debut when last of ten in an overnight but he had been pretty consistent at three and managed a good win in the Regent Stakes. He will be better over this trip and probably has a similar chace to everything else.

8 Broom Handle, trained by Eastern Equine
Beaten 10 lengths into eighth in an allowance on Boxing Day after being bought for $80 he has since worked a 1.34 and 3 mile so on works is right in this race. On form there isnt much to go on so all i can say is the wide gate mat beat him.

SUMMARY
This race just looks a bit HRP silly to me. Horses with very little form working well under 1,35 which is the same as grade one winning turf routers. I really cannot read this race at all so i will use teh draw and the jockey to pick the winner which is what it will probably come down to anyway. So Sleet to win from Broom Handle with Danke Schon in third, but of course that could just as easily be the last three.
