The Devil Looks Good for Mabee Stakes

Mabee Stakes – Grade II
DMR   Race #12   1 1/8m   Turf   Graded Stake
Purse $200.000  For Fillies And Mares Three Years Old And Upward.

1 Jaxartosaurus, trained by Chili King Stables
She has done pretty well since being bought for $75.000 winning an overnight and then putting in a solid effort to be second in the Solana Beach Stakes. She has raced like this trip will be right up her alley and a sub 1.35 mile work suggests she will be competitive from a  good draw and with the three year old weight allowance.

2 Devils Wears Prada, trained by Axeman
This mare should win, end of story. She beat the weight allowance to win the grade one Gamely in May and then ran two great races from wide draws to be third in both the Diana and the Beverly D. Even giving weight i cant see how she gets beaten today.

3 Taking Liberties, trained by GDp Inc
Another purchased fairly cheaply she was behind Devils Wears Prada in the Gamely but there are signs she has improved a little so she should get closer today. She may find this trip a little on the short side as she can get a little outpaced but she will be running on at the end for sure.

4 Well Built, trained by Golden Stables
Claimed from a maiden at the beginning of the year she hasnt stopped improving and must have a good chance with the three year old weight allowance. She was pretty game in the Pucker Up Stakes last time suggesting she has the hidden heart gene and that will certainly help against some good fillies and mares.

5 Bird Of Prey, trained by Mb Stables
A solid three year old but by no means the star of the stable. She tried to make all in the Wonder Where Stakes last time but was collared and had to settle for second and that may be her best effort today.

6 Real Wild Thing, trained by Allinthegate
Managed to beat a couple of wide drawn three’s in The Wilshire Stakes the time before last but found it tougher in the Yellow Ribbon Handicap last time when a one paced third. Prior to her defeat last time she had won 4 in a row so clearly has ability and some good work times suggest she can run big today.

7 Flyer Destiny, trained by TwinTowersRacing
Took the grade three Beaugay in the mud and her best chance may come with the rain. Ignore her last effort in a sprint and she could be thereabouts if you trust she can handle the widish draw.

8 Viking Amy, trained by Delta Farms
Ran very nicely to be fifth in the Gamely  and then did pretty well in the Dance Smartly to be a soldi second. Her last start was one of the HRP anomalies where she finished a 21 length sixth in the Waya on a soft track. Considering she finished second in the Dance Smartly on a soft track in the start before the rain seemed to be a stretch as far as excuses go so it remains a bit of a mystery. Taking that effort away she is working well and has form that is good enough to get her into the race.

SUMMARY

Even with the three year olds getting their weight allowance i cant get past Devil Wears Prada for this race. For once the three’s may struggle as i like Viking Amy too but i should think at least one of the paying places will be taken by three year olds and i think Well Built will be the best of them.
