The JC Derby – A Race for the Record Books

The JC Derby [BC]
1 1/2 Mile Turf Stake Purse $1,000.000 Open 3 Year Olds.

Well this race had an eerily familiar look to it. First of all its a $1,000.000 race and sure enough an Mb Stables runner pulled off the win and secondly once again we saw a race that looked more like Watership Down with bunnies skipping over the fields than an actual horse race. The question as to whether the result would’ve been different if the farmer had gone and shot the rabbits before the start can never be answered but one thing is for sure this looked about as far from what HRP are trying to achieve with regards to reality as a race can be. The track record for a six furlong race at BEL was set seven years ago by a horse called Kofi who went 1.07.72, that horse went through four furlongs at 45 seconds. Now the fact that the 4 furlong track record, the five furlong track record and the six furlong track record were all broken in a 12 furlong race by a horse that had only ever won a dirt maiden should tell us something is wrong with the current state of affairs. But the current state of affairs is what we have and whilst it may look like some crazy Japanese skit on horse racing it does in fact make for quite the spectacle as horses appear from off the screen in the stretch and fly home like Pegasus.
Here is how they finished, needless to say the “came from way off the pace” story can be ditto’d amongst the money grabbers.

1st Spiral Mb Stables Court J K

It takes me back to the days of four year old autgens when i see a free track maiden winner that debuted 3 months ago winning a thousand dollar race. This horse is apparently a superstar of biblical proportions but was only discovered in June and was deemed good enough for a throw away debut at PEN. Now i am pretty sure the trainer would say with their tongue in their cheek that this race was always the target but this is where we are 3 months after that scrambled free track win and you have to say this horse really does look like a freak.

2nd Sunlander Estero Farms Landeros C

Beaten 11 lengths in the DMR Handicap last time and now a very close second in a $1K race, what can i say other than this must be the most inconsistent horse in training. On current form he wont win a claimer next time out so his trainer will be planning for the race after that when he will be due another big run.

3rd Dead Madness John Henry DeCarlo C P

He looked unbeatable before the start but i felt a rabbit would ruin his chances as he likes to up on the speed and sure enough, though he was flying home with everything else, he could only manage third. He lives to fight another day but may of course face the same problems in the BC Turf where he is heading.

4th Sumi Gaeshi Maxmillion Farm Prat F

One assumes he was to be the benefactor of the rabbiting but even at a distance of 13 lengths he was taking up too much energy chasing a record breaking pace. Fourth in the end which to be honest looked the best he could do anyway. A nice enough effort but he is running out of time to get in the BC now.
