KD Turf Sprint Reads Like an Agatha Christie Novel

KD Turf Sprint – Grade III

KD   Race #3   6 1/2f   Turf   Graded Stake
Purse $500.000  For Three Year Olds And Upward.

1  Proud Revolt    Stone Creek Farm   Bridgmohan S X

Took the prelude for this race with a swooping late run from a poor draw and gets a much better draw today and should get a cosy trip as long as he doesnt get buried. A winner of the San Simeon over this trip he has been outpaced over 5 furlongs in a couple of races and this would seem to be his ideal trip. A super fast 57 and 2 work recently tells me he is ready to run a huge race.

2  Improvisational    Mb Stables    Pennington F

Mb Stables tests HRP with this runner who with her weight and sex allowance gets in with a feather weight and the very capable F pennington in the saddle. Just a little above average her works at around 57 and 4 will be good enough with the weight break and she is already a black type winner over this trip. She proved in the Monrovia Stakes that she can live with this level but with only 5 starts and a standing at only 15.2hh i do worry that the hustle and bustle of the big boys will see her beat.

3  Friends Of A Feather   Royalty Racing    Maldonado E

A good sort in overnights he proved he has the class to compete at this level when third in the San Francisco Mile and has also won at this specialist trip. His recent work at the track suggest he is ready and he will be strong to the line.

4  Better Be Pleasant   Gdp Inc                 Sanchez M J

A fast sort at a lower level he has a decent record with 6 wins from 13 starts and deserves a crack at the big players. If he can stay strong for the whole trip he will be in it at the end.

5  Desmond    Sharis Stables    Roman E A

Looks to be the form horse of the race picking up the grade one Highlander in his last start. A regular in black type all year he is one of the few four year olds to train on and he will take all the beating today.

6  K T Warrior    Maxmillion Farm    Albarado R J

Came from obscurity to win the National Museum Of Racing last time but drops right back in trip today to race in a sprint for the first time since being beat as a two year old maiden. He is certainly an improving type but it will be a mammoth task to sprint with these very fast runners today. If he doesnt get too far back he is sure to be finishing strongly.

7  Freak Storm    Mo Mentum Farm   Frey K

A solid work horse of a sprinter he was only a half length behind in the San Simeon but still hasnt managed w in this year despite 9 attempts. He will give hs all as he always does but his all may just not be good enough.

8  Derby Pip    RNP Stables    Centeno D E

Another work horse sprinter he was only beaten a half length in the grade one Highlander and also ran a cracker last time in the forego. Having his eleventh start of the year he has certainly been busy and i like the fact that he comes back to the grass today over a trip that suits. Certainly has the class if he can make the draw work for him.

9  Sweeps    Drabfantasy    Ortiz I Jr

A typical runner for the stable he won his maiden and allowance very easily over vastly different trips and surfaces and was then thrown into graded company in only his fourth start. He ran huge in the Connaught Cup running home strongly just a length behind the winner in sixth. His works are freakish for one so lightly raced but i have two concerns, one being the draw and the other being the trip.

10  Treasure Trove    Mb Stables    Colon L H

He has done much of his racing over much further than this but sprinted very well in the Troy Handicap last time  when very nearly causing an upset only getting beat a head into second. For a horse that ran in the BC Marathon last year his turf sprint work times are surprisingly fast but that often happens at HRP. If he wins this i guess it proves that even the great Mb Stables takes a long time to spot a horses true calling .

11  The Grandmaster   Team 7 Illusions    Hernandez R M

The winner of the Parx Sprint in a lightning time he did well enough in the Play The King Stakes last time to suggest he can run this trip well. The draw is horrible but he is working 57 and 2 and gets the three year old weight allowance so must still has a significant chance.
12  Lunar Blaze    John Henry    Velazquez J R

Talking of great routers taking a different career route late in life this one wold really be an extraordinary winner especially as he finds himself drawn way out in 12. The winner of nearly 3K he doesnt win as much these days but proved with his third in the Arlington Million last time that he still has bags of class. Like all great routers his works are as good as any sprinter so who knows, miracles may just happen.

SUMMARY

Wow what a very interesting race this is. We have an Mb Stables filly trying to steal this with a feather weight. We have one of the best turf routers of recent years in Lunar Blaze and we have a bunch of proven sprinters who are all within a few lengths of each other. As for the winner well, that really is a good question and as i have no real idea i am going to go for the result of the season and say Lunar Blaze will create his own bit of history.
