The Kelso Stakes Preview: American Generals Looks Ready To Graduate

The Kelso Stakes will be run on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Saratoga as Race #5, a Grade III contested over 1 mile on the inner turf for horses four years old and upward carrying a purse of $225.000. First run in 2015, the Kelso has been captured by several outstanding milers, including two-time winner Spiral for Mb Stables in 2021 and 2022. Mb Stables has won four editions overall, while Nakamura Stables returns seeking a third Kelso victory following Brain Power (2018) and Cascade King (2024).

1. Jerk Pork — TwinTowersRacing / Rodriguez Jam — Odds: 8/1

Jerk Pork arrives in solid graded company form after finishing third in the Manhattan-G1 at Saratoga and winning the Muniz Memorial-G2 at Fair Grounds in March. Earlier this season he was a close second in the Tampa Stakes-G3 and owns a strong 17-race turf record. He has proven he belongs with quality competition and has enough tactical ability to work out a favorable trip if he returns to his March form.

2. King Luka — Night Rider Stables / Castellano J J — Odds: 20/1

King Luka is the veteran of the field and has been facing graded stakes company throughout 2026, including the Turf Classic-G1 and Tampa Turf Classic. While his recent finishes have not threatened the winners, he has trained sharply coming into this race, including a bullet turf work at Saratoga. He will need a significant turnaround to contend against this group.

3. Neon Lightning — Nakamura Stables / Santana R Jr — Odds: 7/2

Neon Lightning was a Grade I winner last fall when taking the Hollywood Derby and also captured the Shadwell Turf Mile-G1. His four starts this season have all come against graded company, although he has yet to reach the winner’s circle. His recent workouts at Saratoga have been outstanding, and dropping back to one mile could allow him to rediscover the form that made him one of last year’s top turf runners. He is a major contender.

4. Western Knight — Our Athletes / Saez L — Odds: 12/1

Western Knight has competed exclusively against quality opposition over the past year, including the Opening Verse Stakes, Maker’s Mark Mile-G1 and Commonwealth Turf-G3. He owns three turf victories but has yet to hit the board in three starts this season. His consistent placement in graded events gives him some appeal, although he needs a stronger late kick to threaten the favorites.

5. Penal Hockey Party — Maxmillion Farm / Carmouche K — Odds: 6/1

Penal Hockey Party brings the richest lifetime record into the race with more than $4,390.610 in earnings and eleven career victories. He finished a close second in the Whittingham-G2 before tackling the Shoemaker Mile-G1, and earlier this year captured the Connally BC at Houston. His class is unquestioned, and if he reproduces his best mile form he has every right to contend for another graded victory.

6. American Generals — Riggins Racing / Bridgmohan S X — Odds: 5/2

American Generals enters in outstanding current form after winning three of his last four starts, including consecutive one-mile turf victories at Houston and Belterra. His only defeat during that stretch was a narrow second at Keeneland. Sixteen wins from thirty career turf starts illustrate remarkable consistency, and he arrives as an improving horse whose recent performances suggest he is ready for another successful step into graded company. He is the one to beat.

7. Good Memories — Mb Stables / Velazquez J R — Odds: 9/2

Good Memories owns an exceptional career record and has already proven capable of winning graded stakes, including last fall’s River City Handicap-G3. His 2026 campaign includes a Grade III victory in the Canadian Turf and respectable efforts in Grade I and Grade II company before finishing fifth in the Poker Stakes-G3. Mb Stables has dominated the history of this race, making him one of the most dangerous runners in the field.

8. Port Gibson — The Sidley Stud / Espinoza V — Odds: 10/1

Port Gibson has quietly put together another productive season, highlighted by a victory in the General Memorial Stakes and a runner-up finish in the San Marcos-G3. His form has remained steady throughout the year, and he has enough tactical versatility to stay within striking distance early. While this field is deeper than some he has recently faced, his consistency makes him a legitimate upset possibility.

9. Fourth Estate — High Voltage / Lezcano J — Odds: 15/1

Fourth Estate returns after two allowance appearances this season following a campaign that included starts in both the Hollywood Derby-G1 and Breeders’ Cup Turf-G1. His recent races have been respectable without threatening the leaders, but his workout pattern has been encouraging. He will need to elevate his performance considerably to challenge this accomplished group.

10. Saratoga Lake — D J C Racing Stables / Fresu A — Odds: 12/1

Saratoga Lake has been knocking on the door throughout his career and nearly added a stakes victory last month when beaten only a neck in the Kingston Stakes at Saratoga. Earlier this spring he won a one-mile claiming event in convincing fashion and has shown an affinity for the local turf course. Another forward effort would not be surprising if he secures another favorable trip.

11. Caste — Arindel / Franco M — Odds: 8/1

Caste comes into the Kelso off consecutive victories at Saratoga and Aqueduct, including a determined score in the Kingston Stakes. He has won six of seventeen career starts, all on turf, and has shown the ability to either set the pace or stalk effectively. This represents another rise in class, but his current form suggests he belongs in the conversation.

Pace Structure & Race Outlook

Several runners possess natural early speed. American Generals, Good Memories, Caste, Saratoga Lake, and Neon Lightning have all shown the ability to race prominently, while Jerk Pork generally sits just behind the leaders waiting to make his move. Penal Hockey Party and Port Gibson are likely to settle in midpack before launching their bids, with King Luka and Fourth Estate expected to do their best running during the latter stages.

The expected honest tempo should give the proven mile specialists every opportunity. If the leaders begin to pressure one another through the middle stages, American Generals appears ideally positioned to strike turning for home, while Good Memories and Neon Lightning look best equipped to capitalize should the pace become demanding.

Projected Winner

Top Selection: American Generals

American Generals receives the nod based on outstanding current form, three victories from his last four starts, and a proven ability to dominate at today’s one-mile distance. Neon Lightning is the principal danger if he returns to the Grade I-winning form he displayed last season. Good Memories brings the strongest Kelso-winning connections into the race and remains a serious threat, while Penal Hockey Party has the class and experience to make his presence felt. Caste rates as the live longshot after entering off consecutive victories and continuing to improve.
