Sophomores Dance Smartly

Dance Smartly Stakes – Grade II
1 1/8 Mile Turf Stake Purse $200.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.

When I reviewed this race, I said the three-year-olds would finish one-two. Low
and behold they did, and whilst I am happy to be right, the reasons I am right
make me just a little sad. There is no doubt which were the most accomplished
horses in this race, but with the crazy ‘ready to race’ three-year-old fast
development we have here at HRP, pretty much any half decent three-year-old can beat
older horses with the weight allowance, even if they are BC champions. Now whilst
I may sound harsh, I dont mean to take anything away from the winner, which did it very
well and must have a bright future going forward, well until she meets next years
three-year-olds, that is.

1st Mo Ki Missy, trained by Spankys Barn
The winner of a maiden claimer and an allowance, she was beaten in a couple of graded
stakes coming into this, but is clearly improving all the time and won with plenty in
hand, recording triple digit speed figures in the process.

2nd Shekinah, trained by Blushing Meadows
Another that has only won a maiden and an allowance, she has been knocking on the door
for a bit longer than the winner, recording a second in The Nassau previous to this run.
She looked to have a good position, but could not quicken like the winner did keeping on
for second, but not threatening the win.

3rd Rip Snortin, trained by Aer Stables
Started just behind and made no impression on the first two.

4th Broomsticks Copy, trained by Drabfantasy
The 1/10 favorite for this, set sail early on, but faded badly in the closing stages. The
reigning BC Champion filly has struggled like most four-year-olds this year and probably
needs to be shelved for a few months until the three-year-old weight allowance adjusts.
I dont think its time to hold up the white flag yet, but I do think she needs a break.
