Thursday Stakes Action Takes Us to WO for Dominion Day Stakes

7/1/21

4   WO      Dominion Day Stakes (GIII)

$150.000           4yo&Up              1 1/16m  Dirt             122lbs +penalties

North of the border we go for the Dominion Day Stakes (GIII) and some Thursday graded stakes action.  I took Burning Approval as the top selection today.  I love speed on the rail and he has both here.  Mb always brings them in good form and this one certainly lives up to that… add in that his stable mate Groovy is in here and I look for both of them to be tough when they hit the wire.  I’ll take an oldie but a goodie as my second choice and put Combat Wombat in the picture.  I know he hasn’t been his best of late, but the 6yo gelding is a class act and I think this is a spot for him to make some noise.  It’s a loaded field so grab a cold snack and let’s head down to the rail for what promises to be a run and gun fun race.

Here’s The Field –

1
Burning Approval    Mb Stables    Moran D   122   5/2

Comes into this one with back-to-back wins including a nice score at BEL in the Seek Again where he stalked and pounced to get home first.  He closed out ’20 with a nice third (DH) in the Cigar Mile (GI) so he has some class as well.  His speed and inside position should make him tough today.

2
Duke King    Mental Bloch Racing    Husbands P   122   4/1

Solid fourth as the post time favorite in the Triple Bend (GII) at SA last out where he just got out-finished by some tough horses.  Considering he was claimed for $8.000 just four races back, he’s come a long long ways.  He should be in the middle of this one as well.

3
Rotten Apple    Nakamura Stables    Boulanger G   122   7/2

Looked good taking the Blame at CD right after winning at the $32.000 claiming level, and this gelding just never seems to run a bad race.  He’s always in the hunt from the top of the lane to the wire, and that’s what you want in a race horse.  This looks like another spot where he can be a factor.

4
Combat Wombat    Maxmillion Farm    Ryan S   122   7/1

I love this ol’ classy rascal but his last three graded races have been less than thrilling.  He did get the job done vs. high end Alw horses at SA so you know he still has it in him, but can he find some of that old magic and beat black-type horses here today?

5
   A Classy Beast    Night Rider Stables    Wilson E J   122   12/1

Has struggled for the most part when facing stakes company, but did take down NY-bred Alw horses at FL last summer.  Only one start this year where he was third at CT vs. open Alw horses.  He will have to step up in a big way to be in the middle of this one.

6
Downward Roll    Big Jd Racing    Contreras L   122   6/1

Another solid runner that has three wins and a pair of thirds from his five seasonal starts.  Third in a pair of NY stakes and won at FP vs stakes company, so he’s another that certainly knows how to put money in the bank, and he may have decent odds here today.

7
High Fives    High Voltage    Lermyte J   122   5/1

Another consistent type but he’s still looking for his first win of the ’21 season.  Third vs graded horses at GP three races back and again last out in the Blame at CD.  He looks to be just a tick shy of getting over the hump and winning a big race, so could today be the day?

8
   Groovy    Mb Stables    Stein J   122   3/1

Sharp horse that just hasn’t been quite as sharp of late, his last win coming in the JC Gold Cup (GI) last fall.  But he’s been on the board vs. graded company three times this year and was fourth in the BC Classic (GI) last fall… yeah, the big barn comes to take home the loot!

9
Set In Space    Nakamura Stables    Kimura K   122   7/1

Won last out on a sloppy PIM track to take down OptAlw types and get back on the right side of things.  His 4yo season hasn’t lived up to his sophomore season, but lets see if the win thing is contagious and he can keep it going here.

10
Class Edge    Chili King Stables    Fukumoto D   122   6/1

The ’20 KYD runner-up looked like he was back on track winning the MIneshaft (GIII) at FG, but was twelfth and tenth in the next graded efforts.  Close to be third vs top end Alw horses last out, so he is showing some form but will need to get back in a big way to replicate some of his best effort.

11
   Broken Tap    Arindel    Hernandez R M   122   5/1

Won the Hooper (GIII) and GP Mile (GII) to get the season kicked off in a big way, but tired to be sixth in the Alysheba (GII) and was eighth in the Met Mile (GI) last out, so he will need to shake it up a bit here and get back to the earlier form.

12
   Buffalo G    Nakamura Stables    Bahen S R   122   7/1

He’s looking for his first seasonal win but does have a pair of runner-up efforts coming into this one.  Just missed in the Caica Electronica and again in the Seek Again, both showing speed and giving very game efforts.  Can he raise it a notch in this one?
